It seems that the Chinese knew something long before the pandemic. Otherwise, I can't explain the Chinese craze for protective masks a few years ago. However, N95 Masks still became popular during the pandemic. They have proven their effectiveness in protecting the human respiratory tract from viruses and dust and are now actively used by practically everyone. I think this is because nobody wants to get sick, and people have finally realized how dangerous epidemics can be.
