Thread: Reparing cracked clear coat

    Default Reparing cracked clear coat

I am working on a car for friend of mine. The clear is cracked on the fender. Is it possible to wet sand these out and buff? If so what pad and compound is best? If this will not work, do I have to get the cracks completely out before spraying clear over it? In other words will the clear fill the cracks? I'm using a high solids Omni clear. Ever thing I have worked on before was with single stage, that why all the questions.

    Thanks,
    TJ

    Hi TJ
Clear will fill/hide most fine scratches but usually NOT cracks. Take a little clear on a small paint brush and apply it to a small area over the crack. What you see will probably be the result if you spray over the crack. In most cases when a finish is cracked you need to remove the entire coating down to the metal then prime, color and clear in order to get a "good" result.

The link below shows the way we usually tackle this type of job.
