Default Can i skip this grit??

    Hello,

I'm in the process of colorsanding a car totally flat. I've already started using 800 grit wet on block to get rid of the orange peel. Now that the peel is gone, I intend on using finish film on my 3/32 airvantage. I planned on using 1000, 1200, 1500, 2000, 3000 on machine but do i need to go through all those grits??

    Can i skip the 1200?

Is interface pad good for flat large panels or should i use just the pad alone? Will it introduce waves with interface pad? THANKS!

I can't comment on the interface pad since I've never used them, but you could probably start at 1200 and work up from there (dropping the 1000). But starting at 1000 and jumping to 1500 shouldn't be that big of a deal.

if the peel has been removed you can use the sander with the interface pad to remove the coarse scratches. The interface pad will help the pad sand the curved panels evenly.

After block sanding with 800 you could skip the 1000 grit and after the 1500 you could jump to 3000 Trizact or 4000 Abralon before polishing.

I agree, and glad to see Len carries the combo packs. Brings the cost WAY down over buying a box of each. This way, you can find what works best for YOU then order a box of each one you like and still be saving money.

Experience - will allow you to work without the interface pad. You can get the job done quicker without the pad. It does and should be used near curves and such or until you get good.

Look at how deep your scratch is with the 800. If heavy, use the 1000 JUST to remove most of the scratch, then 1500, then 3000 if you need it that fine.

What are you using to buff with as a compound/polish.

I finish film sand with 1200, buff with Sure Finish using 3 different pads and call it done. Henry

    thanks henry,

I'm using sure finish with the 6" wool SF pad and then the orange foam. I did a corvette about 2 yrs ago with this whole system and it looked seriously wet but i didn't attack the sanding process thorough enough. I used 1500 dry with finish film and interface pad to level some peel that i think required 800 atleast just to level. The reason i'm asking about using/not using an interface pad and the pad by itself is because my hook-it pad somehow got a little bent outta shape on 1 side so i got kinda worried as to using it. I find myself posting on here more when it comes down to my own project i've been working on for 4 yrs just to refresh my memory cause i get paranoid but then again i get input from all sorts of professionals with interesting techniques and new info seems to arise in the forums on a daily basis. I'm going to try to keep the rest of the sanding to a bare minimum since i already hit it with 800 wet pretty aggressive. I sprayed 3 coats of clear but still wanna be on the safe side. Thanks again guys. - chris
