Time for a new gun?? I think..

Several years ago I started doing a little paint and body work as a hobby, a t the time I researched on the net and on the advice of Len Stuart I purchased a Devilbiss Finishline II. This gun has served me well, I have learned to prime, paint, spray base, and clearcoat all with this gun.

Over the past year I have actually done some jobs for money which has given me more varied experience I am finally at the point where spraying metallics doesn't scare me like it used to, and I am confident with clear in the gun, I know I still need a lot more time with a gun in my hand and I want to continue to improve.

I think that it is time for me to step up the next level with my gun I would like to purchase a new gun and get a bigger tip for my FL2 to use as a primer gun only.

I am thinking of the Devilbiss CVI, I need a gun to spray both base and clear, and like I said I want to step up to the next level in spray quality.

Although I haven't posted here that much, I have lurked here for years and owe a lot to this board and the people on it for the advice I have gleaned over the years...so heres to the pro's who selflessly pass on their knowledge to us backyard hacks.

Now pick me a gun...

I am in the same boat as you are and im going to go with the Dev. Plus, i have heard only good things about this gun, and it only uses 9 cfm of air

The DeVilbiss CVi is probably the best clear coat gun I've ever used but, while it does spray base decently, I think you would be better off with a different gun if you want one gun to spray both base and clear with one gun.

The DeVilbiss Plus is an excellent all round gun it can spray base and clear very well and it comes with 3 fluid tips and even an inlet pressure gauge. As far as I'm concerned the Plus is the best gun for the money on the market, it sprays all the top coats well and it costs less than other top performing guns.

I don't have any specific advice except to say that if you are upgrading your gun get the very best you can afford. I bought a new gun a few years ago because it was on sale Napa -- a Sharpe T-1 compliant. Its a decent gun, but just not doing the job I had hoped. I was getting just as good of results with my old Binks #62 antique.

I am thinking about buying another new gun -- heard good things about the Devilbiss CVI and Plus. Also considdering a SATA RP, if somebody can honestly tell me it is really a superior gun. My use will be strictly for clear coat and solid color single stage.

How is the CVI for single stage urethanes (solid colors)? Would you recommend it or the plus for SS? What size fluid tip are you using on the CVI?

Another vote for the Plus. I have both the Plus and CVi but never sprayed base with the CVi so I cant say how it performs with base (Len says descent)
and it seems to maybe spray clear as well as the plus, but not better IMO. It is considerably lighter and more comfortable than the Plus

I have used it & liked it very much. That said, I can't put down my Sata RP & the NR 3000. I'll probably go to my grave clutching those guns!

for 2K primers I think a minimum of a 1.8 is best. Personally I would use a 1.3 0r 1.4 on the FL2 for sealers and other low viscosity primers and get an el cheapo generic 2.0 gun for 2K. Thats what I have and I love it. It was cheap and very little overspray because of the big tip and I use it at pretty low pressure

I have a 1.4 and a 1.6 tip for the FLII now, I can use the 1.4 for epoxy and sealer and get a 2.0 for 2k primer.
