    Default Absolutely a last resort.

We almost NEVER use fish eye eliminator because....

    1. It causes more orange peel.
    2. You need to put it in any and all paint coatings that are applied to the surface after the coat that you first use eliminator.
    3. Depending on the products you're using it can have a negative effect on adhesion.

Do yourself a favor and use clean compressed air and apply your materials to a clean surface and eliminate the fish eye eliminator unless there is no other way to fix your problems. Don't spray lubricants or silicones in the same area where they can land on a surface before it's painted and try to eliminate other polluted air from contaminating your project before it's sprayed.

Most definately there are downsides to using fish eye killer. All fish eye killer is - silicone. it floats any other silicone or wax contaminants to the upper surface where its absorbed by the rest of the silicone. That fish eye killer get partially absorbed by the paint causing the paint to remain soft much longer then eventually dry out. One you use fish eye killer on a job then you MUST use it with every coat applied after that (regardless of time, could be month or years) If you don't you end up with a real mess on your hands.

I have a bottle of "smoothie" (fish eye killer) thats been sitting on the paint bench shelf for at least 10 years and I refuse to use it in my shop. Just about all fish eye problems can be repaired easily if attended to at the right time. It would take up too much time and space here on this website to list the best ways of elimination of fish eyes. The most important thing when dealing with fish eyes is to STOP right away when you see the fish eyes forming and figure out the best plan of attack. To just keep putting more paint on as usual will in most cases just compound the problems.

thanks guys for your imput. Maybe its imposible to eliminate all fish eyes especially if spraying at your home. I should have the cleanest air in town. I have 2 water traps then down the line I have a Motor guard filter and on my gun a smaller dryer/filter unit. Usually the base coats are fine but maybe on the second coat of clear I might get maybe 3 or 4 minor and maybe 1 to 2 major fisheyes. I usually just dab em......they just irritate the " S " out of me.
