    Default Did something stupid

I did something stupid the other night but I don't think I've been burned so consider this food for thought.

I was mixing up some epoxy and was planning to reduce it for use as a sealer. Well, my silicone and wax remover is in a can that is almost identical to the can of normal reducer. So not paying attention I reduced the epoxy with silicone and wax remover. Went over to the part I was working on and sprayed it. At that point a light came on and I realized what I had done. At first I thought maybe I should get the stuff off before it dries, but then I said "F#$% it" and went inside for dinner. I came back out and it seemed to be drying/curing like it always does. Two days later it didn't seem any different from the parts with properly mixed epoxy. So I'm going to roll with it.

I'm not going to recommend stepping on paint and primers with the wrong solvents, but I'm thinking this is inspiring a science project regarding pricey reducers versus cheap cleaners.

Another reason I always put stuff in the same place all the time. If someone went in and took all the labels off my stuff, i'd still know what 99% of the stuff was.

It may work and it may cause problems later so I wouldn't recommend it as a matter of practice but if it's on a project that isn't real important or in an area that can be repaired if it should fail, I see no reason to remove it if it looks and reacts the same at this time.

Well we're into the third day at this point and still no problems. I think I got lucky because the cure time on epoxy is fairly long which gives plenty of time for the solvent in the cleaner to evaporate. I won't make a habit of doing this, but at least I got to learn this lesson the hard way which wasn't too painful. Always check what you're using before you use it.
