    Default 3/8 drive torque wrench

i decided that i want to get a 3/8 torque wrench for my box. this is for a multitude of reasons, mostly because i want to get a better feel for how tight things SHOULD be. i'm not one to usually buy cheap tools, but is the one from harbor frieght any good? or should i just pay the snap-on prices yet again...

No need for Snap On prices. One of the one's I own is a Craftsman Torque Wrench, 3/8 in. Drive (Sears item #00944594000 Mfr. model #44594) and use it all the time.

Very well built and accurate. No self respecting gear head should be without one of these in there box.

My only thought on a torque wrench is to get one that is adjustable. Yes they do loose their setting! By adjustable I don't mean 10 lbs or 50 lbs, I mean their accuracy. We use them on very precise equipment and check them monthly.

Wouldn't that be calibration? I'm pretty sure most Torque wrenches can be recalibrated. Some more easier than others.

Buy a Snap On torque wrench. (bet you never thought I would say that did you ?). I have two snap on torque wrenchs and a Proto torque wrench. I personally would not use anything less. There is a time to save money and a time to spend money, buying a torque wrench is a time to spend money, you will thank yourself later.

I prefer a gear ratchet. Doesn't take that much longer. I'll eventually get one but there's a few other things I need more. Torque wrenches are a dime a dozen on Craigslist so that's probably where I'll eventually go. Probably will come with some impacts too.

Calibration is done with a dial gauge that shows the torque reading with a moving pointer that is dragged along from another pointer and left behind after you have reached the click point of the setting you set the wrench to. If you had this type of gauge you would see how inaccurate the wrenches really are. Not blasting anyones wrench here just telling what I see from using them over time.
