Door Replacement or Patch What I have?
Would like to get your opinions since I value the information that I have gained here and read about on this site.
I am trying to help out a friend of my sons, he has a 97 chev pu and the doors are rusting out along the bottom of the hemmed area on the outside.
I see three options:
1.Neutralize the rust, skim coat and paint. Last probably about a year? Michigan winters are bad.
2. Cut out the rust and weld in a patch like what is shown on this website that Len has had links too.
3. Buy re-pop doors from KSI (Trojan Auto Parts) 125.00 each. (That is cheap!) This seems like the easiest and will last a long time, but will the fit be there like the originals?
Thanks for your opinions.
Probably wont fit great out of the wraper, but best for longevity. Maybe a nes skin?
Aftermarket doors are almost always poorly made and don't hold up very well. If it was my truck I'd look for USED doors at a junk yard or patch the doors I had. The quick and cheap repair won't hold up but, if you know it's not going to last, it's still a viable alternative.
Ya, Id go that route too. Theyd be cheaper, and WOULD fit
if i went with aftermarket, i'd check the spot welds( i got one once that only had one in each corner of the skin)but me personally, i think i'd just reskin the door that i have.
Thanks for the comments.
That was my feeling that the "too good to be true" pricing of the import door wouldnt fit properly or poorly constructed. Although they do have a guarantee if there are any issues with the product, but who wants the hassle if it doesnt fit the opening properly or the mounting holes are not located properly for mounting the hardware etc.
Really I dont need a whole door, its the outer that is rusting because the previous owner lived on a gravel road with no flaps or running boards... you know the story.
I think I will plan to patch up the lower area. The plus side is I dont have to paint the whole door since there is a lower molding to break things up.
