    Default Painting Chrome Bumpers

I'm thinking of painting the chrome bumpers on my next project. Can anyone tell me the steps needed to achieve acceptable results? Thanks,... Tim

    Default Chrome Painting

I usually like to lightly sand blast the chrome to give it some tooth then clean it well and apply a "good" epoxy primer.

When you have them blasted, ask that they use aluminum oxide. Any powder coater whould be able to do it and they understand the finish you need.

is it ok to use paint stripper and a scotch-brite pad together to rough up the bumper in order to prep for epoxy primer?

If you are using it on a metal bumper it would be no problem to use chemical stripper and scuff pad. On a plastic bumper you need to be careful when using stripper because you can hurt the plastic.

I had a set blasted and epoxy primed. No problems at all.

I don't think scotchbrite will rough up the chrome enough.

You're absolutely right that a scuff pad won't rough up the chrome, the best I could do with hand sanding was to use 80 grit on a DA and even then it was difficult to get scratched evenly. Blasting is a much better method to give the metal some tooth.
