Default Just What Is The Real Color ? ? ?

    Hi Guys

I believe I've got a mystery at least to me anyway(s)

    I own a 1966 Ford Mustang Convert.
With no I.D. tag on the door.

The color of the car is Turquoise and a guy from my club says its:
    TAHOE TURQUOISE

Then another guy says its: TROPICAL TURQUOISE

    I give-up guys.

Can you please tell me if you can. JUST WHAT THE TRUE FACTORY COLOR IS OR WAN OR WHATEVER

Thank all you guys for helping me in the past and hopefully in the future.
    GOD BLESS YOU ALL

Fords paint code "U" for the 1966 Mustang was named Tahoe Turquoise (according to my Mustang decoder book).

    Hey Phil V

    Thanks for the info.

Tell me Phil what requires NOT bringing my paint down to the bear metal?

I believe that my present paint is not bad at all. However, as seen on DIY network (Great Program) They showed a guy wet sanding and then buffing the paint with several grit buffers.

The color of the paint under the top layer was BRILLANT.

It looked GREAT when the guy was finished.
I the beginning he used serveral different kinds of sandpaper grits then buffed.

My question is this: What happens to the natural clear coat of protecting that was on the car in the first place. I believe its GONE
And I'd be left with an UN-PROTECTED SURFACE ~ YES/NO

O.K. Phil, your the pro. I'm in your hands.

    THanks
    GOD BLESS

Schooner, NO ONE can give you accurate advice on what to do because we have no idea what kind of paint is on your, how thick the paint is, was it clearcoated (if so how many coats of clear and how much clear did the previous owner remove in the sanding and buffing phase of the current paint job.

If the paint is dull with little or no shine then it was probably sprayed with a single stage acrylic enamel, with or without hardener (probably without). It could be lacquer paint that dulled out but again we have no way of knowing if the paint was clearcoated and if so how much of that clearcoat is still on the car.

Having said the previous then my suggestion would be at this point to not wetsand the paint at all. Go buy some coarse rubbing compound and do a small spot of the dull paint by hand to see what degree of shine can be brought back. If it looks like it would be worth your while to buff out the whole car starting with coarse compound then go for it. If hand rubbing the small spot yielded poor results then the car needs to be stipped down to bare metal and start over. The odds of the paint on your Mustang being original factory paint is somewhere between slim and none. Any aftermarket paint applied to that car (painted after it left the factory) needs to be stripped off and start over. Try what I suggested and some back and tell us how it worked and what you saw.
