Thread: two tone painting

    Default two tone painting

    I'm close to painting my 69 Mustang in a two tone. Darker color (still not quite sure on color) on roof, hood, trunk and fender tops. Wimbleton White on lower section. Car is currently in epoxy primer, filler primer goes on Monday. My questions: Do I paint entire car one color first? or just a slight overlap? What is best way to paint..top first or lower sections? What's a good tape to separate colors, will cover with painted pinstripe. Thanks

    As far as tape, I would use the 3M blue vinyl fine line tape to get a good sharp edge. Weather to paint the top or bottom 1st, I say that is personal preference. Me personally, I would paint the bottom color 1st. No need to paint the entire car. Just make sure you have full color coverage just past where the colors will change.

    Thanks for the tip on the tape. Car is apart....hood, trunk, fenders, valances but will have to put back together to keep lines straight.

    Abolutely. I assume you have it apart for edging. Im in the middle of an 87 Mustang myself, and I'll have to put the front bumper cover back on temprarily to do the flames and take it back off to clear everything. I've already painted everything else that wont have any flames on it.
    Someone recommended spraying an intercoat clear on the tape edges to help prevent bleeding. I've never done that, but I cant say it's a bad idea

    I started bodywork when that 69' mustang was a couple years old. I don't recall any mustangs of that vintage being two tone painted (other than either a vinyl top or a painted roof). Why would you want to two tone a Mustang ?

    Default Its the restomod fad Phil...

    Chip Foose is probably responsible for half of the two tone jobs out there...Personally, I like it when done right...Big motor, big wheels, slammed look and two tone paint...Add a mean sound system blasting Bad To The Bone on a sunny summer day and Voila....muscle car heaven...

    It costs a pretty penny to do those though...

    When you're spraying your last color make sure you tape off the seams to avoid overspray from leaking through your jams and ruining your first color. I normally spray the lower color first because it requires lest masking to spray the second color. I did a tutone yesterday(maroon on top, silver on the bottom) I sprayed the upper color first cuz it's a lot easier to cover maroon with silver than trying to cover maroon over silver. (blues, reds, maroons, amd yellows don't cover well at all). I don't know what the hell Dodge was thinking with some of the colors they produced. This was possibly the ugliest truck I've ever repaired.

    I'm doing the two tone because I want it to be different. I've got another 69 coupe that I've had since the early 90's. It's original paint..Wimbleton white..that most think is a high end re-paint. Other than paint, everything else is modified. Bought it from an 80 year old woman who kept it in her garage.

    I will probably do the lower section first.

    At first I didnt want to comment on the post about why you want to do this, b/c I didnt know, So I stayed out of it. (But I really wanted to say because he wants to.) My last 3 personal cars were all painted yellow. Why? because thats what I thought would look best. Were they fords? yes. Were they Ford colors? No. Did Ford put stripes or flames on the way I wanted it? No. Ford didnt have the yellow I wanted, or the paint scheme. As much as I hate GM, I went with GM colors. The only thing GM did right IMO.
    I say do what you think will look best.
    Hurst is right. If the top darker color is a transparent color, Id do that 1st. Some colors just dont cover well, and for the most part, it's the more expensive colors

    Its not a big deal to me if someone wants to two tone a classic Mustang. They can paint it pink with purple polka dots if that what floats their boat. I have been directly involved in restoring at least 30 old Mustangs of the 64 to 73 year range. I have owned at least 10 Mustangs starting with a 64 1/2 convertible to several 73 Mach I fast backs and one Mach I convertible. 65 fastback hot rod and a 66 2+2 fastback show winner. With several other years of coups and fastbacks thrown in. I tend to be stickler for close to orginality when it comes to my favorite old car - The Mustang. I have to admit I did change colors on a couple of them. One from the factory black with red interior to red with a black interior and a yellow car to a red car. Mustangs always looked good in red. Chip Foose did a two toned fastback a while back and it looked great.

    Chiming in kinda late on this, but what I did on my Camaro was paint everything but the doors apart with both colors, then assembled the entire car with only the doors not painted. Then just match the color break at each end of the doors, mask everything but the doors, and paint them. As long as you use solids, you shoudn't have a match problem. It took me a week or two to do mine and no match prob.

    Nice job...I like it very much, 69 camaros are real pretty but this one....

    The two tone works fantastic, the stance is just right....man that's a nice car. It's a 350 car? I just dig the headlamp blackout option was the car optionned this way? You have other pictures?

    I must have missed something here, does a kick butt stereo make the car fast??? I seem to remember a muscle car had to have only a few things to get the girlies and that was the car with an engine that had a decent thump to it loud exhaust and be able to kick the tires loose in fourth gear at 50mph. As far as two tone goes I say gopher it and let the next guy worry about it, two colors are cool.
