Newbie question - What are the drawbacks of going with a non-catalized (sp?) BC in a 2 stage paint system like PPG's Omni/Shopline?
Thanks,
The only drawback to omni is that the base doesn't cover well.I personally have never had a problem even with Omni being non catalysted.I use matrix now, same thing. And yes,i have never had it lift or wrinkle either, even when i had cut through edged on freshly painted fenders etc that i had to redo.
As long as you don't cut through the clear for any reason then there aren't any negative sides to uncatalysed basecoats. BUT say you get a run in the clearcoat or a lot of orange peel and you cut through the clear while trying to get rid of the run or orange peel then when you go to spot in some more basecoat over the cut through (a must to apply more basecoat) then the odds are better than 50/50 that the paint will lift where you sanded through the clear. The same scenario of cut throughs applies to sanding through on a sharp body line etc etc. It should also be pointed out that its not just the lesser expensive Omni/Shopline basecoat that will react that way. The more expensive PPG high end DBC can react in the same way as the omni base if you don't add the DX hardener to the DBC basecoat. There are no hardener/catalysts available for the omni bases.
I won't allow omni basecoat in my shop because of several negative experiences with that paint. One job of spotting in a turqoise metallic too EIGHT COATS OF THE OMNI BASE and if you looked close you could still see through it.
Thanks for the response,
Phil is right. Omni basecoat is junk.

cant say ive ever used omni base coat, but ive heard HORRIBLE things about it. their clear, sealers, and single stage isnt half bad at all though
Same here, I havent/wont use their basecoats cuz of what Phil said. But I DO like their clears![]()
i personally have never had any problems with omni paint or clear. ive used it for a long time, and like it. i think just because its a fraction of the price of the big name paint lines everyone assumes it junk. in my opinion no matter what brand of paint you use, if it isnt prepped right it not going to get good results.i know alot of people that use the omni line and put out some really nice looking work. just my 2 cents
You're right in that prep work can make a big difference and the prep work under some materials needs to be different than with others. However, the paint coatings business is very competitive and there IS a difference in the quality of materials that almost always varies with price. When prepped properly almost all paints will produce an acceptable result but low-end coatings usually start to show their shortcomings as a little time passes while more expensive paints usually hold up much better and usually cover better. Of course there are exceptions to every rule but for the most part price dictates quality.Originally Posted by emerson
