Thread: epoxy primer over etching primer

Default epoxy primer over etching primer

After stripping my 69 Mustang down to bare metal (except for under hood/deck and jams), I'm done with the body work...mostly small dings and dents using Dynatron putty-cote as final filler. I have rattle-canned the entire car with Eastwoods etching primer as it had to sit for a while. Now. I am ready to epoxy prime. Do I need to completely remove the etching primer? Local paint clerk said yes.

    Thanks

Since you used a "rattle can" primer I'd say to take some 2" masking tape and press it hard on a primed area and pull it off quickly. If ANY of the primer releases from the surface you should remove it all then reprime using a "good" material. However if the primer is adhereing well to the surface you can probably get away with scuffing it then applying your epoxy primer. Many shops will apply etch then epoxy in order to maximize adhesion to the surface and to the top coats however these primers are usually high quality products and made to be used together.

Thanks, nothing stuck to the tape....tested in 3 spots, but iI guess I'll try to scuff/remove as much as I can.
