Default The clear is peeling off of my sons Dakota

The truck is a '99 painted yellow. The clear started peeling off on the top of the box rails and now the rear of the cab roof is peeling. He keeps it clean and polished but the color is really dull.
Is this something to persue thru Dodge or chalk it off and repaint it?
I searched the web for recalls and tsb's but found nothing for paint.

The truck is 7 1/2 years old, Chrysler won't stand behind a paint job that old.
Strip the upper half of the truck down to bare metal then shoot epoxy primer, new basecoat followed by new clearcoat. There is nothing you can do that will stop the clearcoat delamination process thats going on.

I didn't think it would be covered by warranty. I think we will sand it down and try to work some kind of black graphics into the top surfaces. My son is great with cad and photo programs where we can see what it will look like before painting.

    Default I agree with Phil

Like Phil said remove the old paint from problem surfaces before you apply anything new. Trying to save work or time will usually cause more problems later.

As far as warranty work goes, I'd still make an attempt to get the factory to pay for the work. You never know, it could be your lucky day.

My buddy took his Dodge truck in, it is a 1996 red 1 ton and the paint was doing what your is. He stuck to his guns and met with the regional rep and he said to paint it and turn in the bill and he would see what he could do. I stripped and repainted it with Omni base and clear. He took the bill to them with pictures and he was able to get a check for the amount of the paint.

Give it a try the worst they can say is no.

This is a very common problem here in the sunny Southwest. I just got done doing my 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix. You may not need to go all the way to bare metal as I didn't need to do that. The bad paint will show itself very clearly when you sand the surface with P400 on a random orbit sander. The bad paint comes off very easily and quickly whereas good paint underneath it doesn't sand nearly as fast. I did get to bare metal in one spot but for the rest of the areas that I had to redo: Roof, Rear Spoiler and rear bumper fascia, solid material was found fairly quickly underneath the dead clear and in some places dead basecoat. I shot a coat of epoxy primer/sealer over the areas I had sanded and then came back with PPG DBC basecoat and Rubber-Seal RS-6000 clearcoat and the job looks great. I'm very glad that I did it.
