Default HVLP gun air pressure/volume control

I've never used a HVLP before so this control I am not familiar with. If I set to provide max volume the paint almost dribles out withbig droplets. At the max pressure end I just get too much bounce back and wasted paint. I have found it difficult to set in between as only a small amount of rotation is needed to go from one extreme to the other. Or put another way the bit in the middle is very sensitive. Am I doing something else wrong?

    I'm no expert, but...
Did you install a pressure regulator just before the gun? I have to adjust the incoming pressure to 23psi to get 10 psi at the nozzle. Your gun should have similar instructions. Test the pattern on a large piece of cardboard to dial in the correct volume.

First one question. Are tryin to use a HVLP with a small home style air compressor? HVLP's need lots of air volume to work correctly. On all my guns I use Sata regulators. But a few guys at the shop set the pressure at the wall regulator what ever there gun specifies or what they look shooting at. At my regulator I have it set between 20 and 30 psi. Which tested at the cap I believe is aroud 7-10 psi. I believe a HVLP needs 10-15 cfm. But I may be incoorect with that statement. But I know my 60 gal 6hp Craftsman Compressor will barely run amy of my HVLP's for a 5 -10 minutes and the air seems to run out. And the compressor cant keep up.

    Default HVLP air pressure/volume

I bought the gun from Germany. It requires 7.1cfm and the compressor is rated at 8, in any case only painting a panel at a time. Regulator/gauge is on the compressor and I have allowed 5 psi pipe drop. Gun inlet requires 29/50 psi and I've set mid point. Spray pattern ok but finish a bit orange peely. No means of measuring the air cap pressure which should be 10psi. Not measuring paint viscosity but adding recommended 50% thinners for temp. 20C. Spraying though at nearer 16C. Added a little more thinners and better finish, more wet looking but I can get runs. Can improve even more if the cap pressue is higher but that defeats the whole HVLP concept. To date I have only tried 1K primer.
