DCC, DBU, Omni, ABCDEFGH.... Argh!

From my other thread, I found the OEM code for Bolero Red for my 55. I want to spray a bit so that I can match windlace, interior paint and exterior paint.

I was fortunate that I found a mom and pop paint shop, AJ Foyt on Cavalcade in Houston if anyone shops in this city for paint. (Great, helpful people, just what I was looking for in a paint store)

Anyway, had my codes and sample sheet from Autocolor library and went to get some paint. The manager/owner helped me find the color though he had to go to PPG tech help, but his wife found the actual code in the computer. Anyway, it's not Bolero Red anymore, it's something else, but.....

Well, I didn't really know what I wanted for this little effort. I know I'm not ready to buy all the paint for the car because I need to make everything match first. So back and forth and I ended up with a pint of DCC.

So, here are the questions for the pros that the paint guy couldn't really help me with.

I'm going to paint the interior also...dash, door panels, tailgate panel. What type of paint should I use for that?? I know it won't be BC/CC. I do intend to use BC/CC for the exterior. I know there will be no guarantee that the two will be exact matches, but then they just need to look good, not match exactly.

Second question...I know DBC is better than Omni. But, i've also read a lot of recommendations for Omni clear. Will Omni BC/CC give me a fine finish or do I need to move up and use DBC? (Or whatever the hell letters they use).

And based on the recommedations I got here earlier, I may go HOK, but I couldn't find anyone who could mix me up a bit of HOK in the immediate area and I didn't have time to make a long concerted effort.( I do have to do some work during the day on occasion). So, if this color works, I can always have HOK match the color.

Yes Omni clear is good, but Ive heard their basecoat leaves a lot to be desired. Ive never tried it myself...but Ive heard their basecoats dont cover so well. I use DBC for basecoat.

We used MBC(Omni Basecoat) and some colors cover well and some dont... Also some werent a really good match while some were so close only a Painter could tell... Their Clear Coat (MC-161) is excellent... I would use DBC Basecoat with the Omni Clear Coat, but its up to you... DCC is Deltron Single Stage, DBC is Deltron Basecoat, MBC is Omni Basecoat, and MTK is Omni Single Stage... Hope this helps!

I would use the same bc/cc for the interior metal parts. I'm not positive, but I don't think GM used flattened interior paints in 1955. If you wanted a semi-gloss on the dash to cut down on glare while driving, you could flatten the clear for the dash or buy a small amount of semi-glass clear from PPG just for the dash. It will look fantastic with bc/cc on the interior and you can be pretty sure of a color match with the exterior.

Are you talking about painting vinyl door and tailgate panels? If so, PPG should be able to convert your basecoat formula to a vinyl paint by adding the correct vinyl resin. That's the way DuPont does it. I'm pretty sure PPG will have something simlar so that the color match shouldn't be a concern. However, using the correct vinyl resin will mean the vinyl paint will be low or medium gloss.

Pot, no the door panels (actually window trim) is all metal and painted to match the dash. Right now, I'm looking at three different colors of red which is unacceptable. It's a pain to think that the whole car color will be decided by the color of the windlace which is made in only one red color.

Windlace color, vinyl color and then paint color. And, as difficult as red is to match, I may end up going away from original in all aspects to contrasting colors to make the match easier.

If you don't want to use bc/cc then get the same color mixed in single stage urethane. I rarely do this but you should get an exact match with the SS paint if you use "good" materials. Personally I would probably use bc/cc on everything.

You will ultimately get what you pay for. The different quality paint products usually look about the same when your finished spraying but their longevity is usually effected by their quality and price.

I'm not sure that HOK can give you a match for the color you want but their products are usually a good quality. If you have a sample of the color you want you should probably get it SCANNED so that you can get a real close match and be able to purchase it again should you need it later. If this were my project (and I wanted a top quality job) I'd probably stick with PPG, Glasurit, RM/Diamont, DuPont or some other top of the line brand and stay away from "bargain" paint lines.

I have used MBC/Omni base and the Omni clear and it works well for me (for the money). The MBC covers well, but it is not catalyzed (no hardener, only reducer). This can cause some challenges on rework as it can lift, but for the money it's a good material IMO.
