Default this thing is getting painted ! know matter what

    hello members

This is my first post on this site .

I have used the aid of internet forums in the past( shofourm, DRN , weldingweb & snowmobileforum just to name a few ) , and they proved to be very helpful .

I am in sort of a pinch . I have a 94 ford taurus SHO , I love that car , from the moment i punched the throttle I was hooked . I scored the sho off a buddie of mine , it looked good and he was hurtin for $ so i walked with the car for under a grand .

I can't say enough good about the yamaha built SHO motor . My rig has 400,00 + and is still a high 14's car . The members @ SHOforum.com are more that helpful and some of these knuckleheads are pushing 400hp.

The SHO had given me very little trouble , if u excude the 2nd day i had it . The trans axle " grenaded " , yup , the diff. pin had let go and destroyed the trans. Changed that trans in my driveway . Not an easy task , got pics if u would like to see .

like i said no problems with the SHO for almost a year . Then 1 afternoon on my way to work , the SHO shutdown on the side of hwy. 402 ( london ) . I hitched a ride to work and returned @ lunch hour to fine the SHO fired right up .

I contacted the members of SHOforum with my situation . They said it was the fuel pump or cps ( crank position sensor ) .

I took the SHO off the road for a while , I had to wait for parts to be shipped to me . Just out of boradum . I pulled the pastics off the side of the car to find RUST! . and alot of it .

I patched all holes with fiberglass and chessed up the low spots. What a nightmare of a body job . I am a millwright and am much more comfortable & productive with turning wrenches . I feel i did a good job and just primed up the car , hopefully returning to paint 1 day .

that day never came . Here I am .......january and the car is not painted the only good thing about it , is that road salt has SHO'd me where i have not primed .

belive it , all that work lost ..........I was just to busy , work & side jobs and of course me putting it off . The time has come again where i a have some time off . That dam car is getting painted ( sick of battleship grey ) , i have all the gear and the SHOp to do er .

One of my biggest mistakes ( so says the body man @ NAPA ) is the products i use . I admit i went to canadian tire and bought the cheap filler and primers puddy . The body man , laughed and told me what that cheap $hit does in cold temps ............he was right

I am diving in balls deep this week , I have autobody Icing , he recommened it and works well and is easy to work with .

I have never painted a car before , my uncle has ( he is in his 60's ) and i will let him SHOot . What i need from u good people is

    1. what grit to bring whole car up to ?

    2. best way to finalize body work , how to make sure i don't miss a thing

    3. best type of paint & is clear coat nessesary

    4. best brand of tape for masting .....the junk i have used does not leave clean lines

    5. I took off drivers door and replaced front 1/4 . i can't really seem to get the body lines just right . In my raqeut there are alot od tricks , i finger u body men might have 1

    6. is it possible ot screw too or drill & tap bondo glass

    7. kinda off topic but is there a way to under coat ur car with some home made oil mixture ?

any info is more that welcome

To date , all the work done on my SHO

    front main seal
    rear main seal
    CPS
    water pump
    timming belt
    rear main carrier gasket
    clutch
    release bearing
    fuel pump
    rod bearings

i migfht be forgeting something . but the car runs great . I learned alot from the good people @ shoforum and i hope to pick up some stuff from u folks

    heres a pick

First thing is to probably grind out any bodywork you first attempted to do. Starting fresh is always good thing.. I would recommend replacing the metal if you have access to the correct equipment, that will give you the longest lasting repair.. If it is just surface rust, grind or sandblast it and and go w/ a good epoxy primer or some metal conditioner. Do you bodywork after that step.. Good luck!

Get a copy of Spray Painting 101 it will answer a lot of questions about paint prep that you don't even know to ask. You usually don't want to paint over a scratch that is deeper than about a 400 grit.

    2. best way to finalize body work , how to make sure i don't miss a thing

After you think the filler work is finished you can apply a filler primer, guide coat and block sand to see any surface variations that may exist. Again, you can see this on the 101 Video.

    3. best type of paint & is clear coat nessesary

If you are painting a metallic color it's best to use clear but solid colors can use a "single stage" paint. The color used under clear is a different type of paint than single stage color.

    4. best brand of tape for masting .....the junk i have used does not leave clean lines

Usually a brand name like Norton, 3M or American Tape is best for masking. If you want to mask for applying stripes or two tone painting you will want to get a good plastic striping tape.

    5. I took off drivers door and replaced front 1/4 . i can't really seem to get the body lines just right . In my raqeut there are alot od tricks , i finger u body men might have 1

Prior to the removal of a panel you usually want to mark the hinge location by scratching or marking around it. You want to do this on both sides of the hinge if possible.

    6. is it possible ot screw too or drill & tap bondo glass

Sure it's possible but usually not desirable if you're trying to fasten something to the surface. The bondo won't hold as well as metal and it could crack or break out quickly.

    7. kinda off topic but is there a way to under coat ur car with some home made oil mixture ?

Oil will work but will wash off after a short time of exposure. It's usually best to apply a product that will dry and hold on to the surface.
