Thread: Is this quote expensive? Omni paint and clear

Default Is this quote expensive? Omni paint and clear

Hey, guys! So, I did not think I was going to have to spend this much on a bc and cc.

I don't know who sells auto paint, except the place I went to today. However, I have a Sherwin Williams, Car Quest, NAPA.

This will be my first time painting a whole car. I will be practicing with panels and hand movements until I can get the panels near perfect. I am doing a full body color change, and it is my daily driver. The car is currently forest green with a brand new red front bumper. There are some body work that needs to be done--just a dent here and there.

I understand white and blacks are the cheapest colors; I am going to go with white because it's easier to hide my flaws (haha).

Here is the break down. I am writing it as I read the sheet of paper given to me.

    -2 qt m bc $66
    -1 gal m reducer $29

    -1 gal dc42002 clear $265
    -1 qt dc461 hardener $110
    -1 qt d78.. reducer $23

    -1 gal xl 36001 primer $66
    -1 qt xl 36104 ???? $32

That's $600 worth of paint, clear, and a 2k primer?!

I would love to stay local, but if I can find a significant lower price on a mid-level line of paint/clear than I will go that route.

Please guide me towards a more budget friendly kit.

    Thank you!

I use pretty low cost materials and the paint and primer seem about right to me. The clear they have you using is high dollar. You should be able to get under $100 for a gallon for clear then buy the activator as needed.

I bought about $700 bucks of paint and materials this week and I've easily already spent that on my project. I figure every time I buy paint I'm going to spend $300 and that's if I already have primers and stuff at home.

Just for the fun of it I plugged in a paint name into a paint retailer web site. Used 1968 Ford highland green poly and this is what I got for PPG Deltron DBC.

    1 qt. DBC $138
1 qt. reducer $22 as mix is 1:1

1 gal. kit of 4010 Velocity Premium clear and hardener $290-$300 depending on slow or medium.

You are not going to get much lower on your 2K primer nor on your Omni base. How much Omni base you might need is hard to say since most agree Omni base is thinner and could take more coats than DBC for complete coverage. I was able to beat the clear price and the PPG 4010 is their top line clear which could be used on top of any PPG paint.

See the color white so 1 quart base was $107.49 while house brand was $44.95 for wimbledon white.

Omni base at $33 per quart. Yikes, make me wonder how good it is and how much I would really need. Well since I paint my cars, and they are keepers, I use the best I can get because god knows I don't like doing things the second time.

omni base is cheeeeeeep. wow, I didnt know you could get it that cheap. I usually pay 60-80 qt of chromabase(dupont). And PPG dbu is even more expensive about 120 qt. You should be able to get a decent clear for about 100 gal +25 activator. Zolatone, HSC, U-Pol, Kirker, Finish 1 - sherwin willams, Nason, you could all get for about 125 with activator. Your primer is about right. I second the YIKES on 33 per quart. Wow, sounds like junk again,,same as shopline.8)

Sherwin Williams/Martin Senor Dimension/Crossfire are all the same. Napa carries it. Dimension Urethane is you best bet. Single Stage. Buy the Refinishers Select or Dimension Urethane Primer. 1 gal paint and primer should get in under 400 bucks. Full color change you need extra paint and in case of mess ups/redos and repairs down the road.

    Online Sherwin Williams Store
    Dimension 2K DP840 urethane Primer. 104.00 Gal.
    Primer Hardener. DH658. 42.00 Quart.
White 5.0 3rd Dimension Urethane Gal. DFP552 Wimbeldon White. 131.00.
    Hardener Qt. 106.00.
    Reducer DR633. 61.00 gal.
Online is way more expensive. I buy from the local jobber.

Jot these numbers down and call your local guy and tell him you were online checking prices and tell him what you need and ask for individual prices. The less you tell him about your inexperience the better off you will be. Most likely less (talk) is more (savings) for you.

    Default U-POL for clear...

Now they do make 3 levels of UPOL clear. Their best in the 5 litre can is some great stuff and yes, about 125/gal w/hardener. Certainly the best in your list.

DuPont at 60-80 for ChromaBase seems cheap. Of course we don't know what color we're talking. I pain $98 for a PINT of Inferno Red Tinted Pearlcoat Metalic which I thought was very expensive. You do get what you pay for.

I find for general projects that SW "Dimension 4" is a best deal going for me at $40/quart, any color and mixes 1:1*. This is normally a 2:1 but my jobber *doesn't add a half a quart of reducer when he makes it.

Like someone said, what are you painting and what color.

You are right henry, I was just mentioning some econo brands which i've been trying lately. Although some are so thin, they are VERY CHEAP. Upol is my favorite though. Zolatone is too. Nason is quite good as well, the rest are really cheapy cheapy. Chromabase has gotten very expensive, althougn only for certain types of tints.

I just remembered last night; the clear is the jobber's top of the line brand of PPG that he carries--DBC. I thought the clear was way more important so I decided to spend more on a higher quality clear.

I bought about $700 bucks of paint and materials this week and I've easily already spent that on my project. I figure every time I buy paint I'm going to spend $300 and that's if I already have primers and stuff at home.
    $300? Uh oh I'm in a world of hurt..lol

I wrote everything down as I could read them. I couldn't read some of his hand writing, but I got the jist of it.

I will call NAPA today and see how much they will charge me.

I will be primering the areas that I do body work on. But since I don't have a sealer, I am going to primer the entire car to neutralize the old base coat. Yay or nay?

Haha, yeah, playing dumb isn't a good thing--people can take advantage of you. For around $400, I will be getting a single stage (as in a bc and a cc in one)? Isn't it just worth it then to spend an extra $100-200 and get a bc and cc?

So the green stealth isn't your car ? I like the looks of the white one . I'm guessing that isn't a stealth front end ?

One of the better looking cars from Japan in my opinion .

That is a nice looking front end. The next generation of Corvettes would do well to take notice.

Hey, Mooch and LS6! Thanks for posting.

That green one is not mine.

The white dodge stealth has a 1999 3000GT front bumper.

I found some pics of my car on the net:

My brother has a dodge stealth RT twin turbo. I like these cars. It's pretty spunky. He wants to put on the 99 300GT bumper on the front and put a new Pearl Yellow paint job on it.

Neat project. Hope the paint job goes well.
