Default SRI Pro Detail Gun, Sputtering or Fluttering Spray

    Hi Guys

Used my Devilbiss SRI Pro Detail Gun for third time yesterday and it was sputtering/fluttering. Shooting unreduced Kirker epoxy at Devilbiss recommended 29 psi. I removed the epoxy, cleaned gun well, and shot acetone through it and it seemed to have the same problem. Any thoughts about what might be the problem? There isn't much to go wrong with this gun, so I'm not sure what might be causing this. The first two painting sessions went off without a hitch - the gun is really nice.

    Thanks

    Pat

If you're using the DeKups that came with the gun I'd say you have an air leak where the cup mounts to the gun OR where the fluid tip seals to the gun. Remove the DeKup adapter and make sure the seal in the gun is in tact then remove the fluid tip and make sure the seal is good. Clean the gun well and replace and tighten the DeKup adapter and the fluid tip then spray some thinner through it and let us know what happens.

Thanks Len. I'll do this tonight when I get home. The only seal on the fluid tip is a very large irregular shaped gray seal that rides between the body of the gun and the flat bottom of the fluid tip (part number 9 below). Unlike many other guns, I don't see a small round seal that sits on the machined face of the fluid tip, under the threads. I looked at the exploded view of the fun in the manual and it doesn't show a small round seal (usually nylon type) under the fluid tip. I'll check the deKups adapter for a seal too - I don't see a seal shown on this exploded view for a cup for deKups adapter? I'll get back to you guys in a day or so.

I don’t own this gun so I don’t have any experience to share but your choice of words struck me. Are you sure that seal isn’t damaged?

    Hi Bob
The seal is irregular in shape and came that way from the factory. It doesn't look round in the exploded view above either. So, I'm pretty sure that the seal isn't damaged. The first two times I used the gun, it worked great. I'll try and post a photo or two tonight or tomorrow.

Thanks Bob. I enjoy your posts and all your good advice.

I find that this problem is usually caused by a fluid nozzle that needs to be tightened up a bit.

Yes, that's were the problem usually is located. If the nozzle is not tight or the seal is damaged it will pull air into the paint stream and cause the gun to sputter.

I had sort of fluttering problem on this gun when I have too much water trapped in the airline filter.
