    Default newbie questions:::

    Hi Guys...I'm a retired doc, and I'm restoring a 1916 Model T - I have some basic questions...

    1. I've been able to blast the old paint and primer down to bare metal with glass beads

    2. I ordered "after blast" from Eastwood to wipe on until I'm ready to spray primer

    3.....really silly question: When do I sand? Am I sanding the primer smooth? Or, am I supposed to sand the bare metal smooth before spraying primer?

    4. I guess I should be using 'high fill epoxy primer, no?

    Thanks...I know this pretty basic stuff..

    You don't need to smooth up the metal by sanding it. A little tooth helps the primer to adhere. It just needs to be very clean when you prime. Usually epoxy primers are not high build but they adhere well and seal the metal off to prevent corrosion. Featherfill and Slick Sand are a couple polyester hi-build primers but there are other types. They can be applied directly over the epoxy primer and plastic body fillers.

    Thanks for the reply...what will the high build primer do for me?

    High build primers like Slick Sand are normally used as a final filler to help level the surface, if all you need is to fill the texture left by the blasting you can probably do it with some urethane 2K filler primer over epoxy primer. Primers like Slick Sand are like a spray-on body filler and will probably need a sealer before applying color but many 2K primers can be painted without sealing. If you have large areas of filler that you want to tweak then a poly primer like Slick Sand is the way to go but for blasting texture use 2K and eliminate a step and save time and money.
