Need paint help guys

Sorry about the newbie questions but this will be my first attempt at painting a car. I am painting my 78 jeep and have it scuffed with 350-400 and bought Nason FUL-POXY 491-16 for primer. Getting ready today to pick a color and go buy it..What is the difference between single stage urethane and enamel? The guy at orielys priced me urethane paint but my brother in law said I should get enamel. If the primer is Nason FUL-POXY 491-16 what paint should I get? And what is the difference between the two?

Not positive on color,Was thinking atomic orange but its allot higher than the green metallic that I was also looking at. .So being on a budget not sure on color yet. And yes,brother in law has been in the body business for 30 years but I will admit,He is old school. He says single stage metallic spray just fine you just have to hold back and give them a good mist after you coat the panel. But I am not sure if he is going to help me or not.After 30 years of painting he hates it..lol He wont even try a gravity feed gun. Not a show jeep,Just a driver.

what your abilities are.

Also, from what you said your bro/law does by holding back and misting the area at the end is what causes you to LOSE the gloss and emphasize the metalic. Metalic should always be sprayed evenly anyway.

What I now think you should do is use acrylic enamel (AE) with hardener. Pick the color you want with tons of metalic. You will get great gloss and nice metalic flow (depending on your ability). Two quarts would be a lot more than you need. DO NOT mix the hardener in paint you are not planning to use.
Sherwin Williams makes an AE called 2nd Dimension which cost $35 - 40 a quart. I've used a lot of this stuff for cheap rental cars and it really looks great.

When I went to get the paint we ended up getting vibrant copper.It is a volvo color.Didnt want to spend that much on atomic orange being my first paint job.When he brought it out of the back he said he mixed a synthetic urethane.It was $86 for 1 gallon but he said it is basically the same thing? He also said most people that spray the nason dont reduce it. He said try to spray it first with just the paint and catalyst and no reducer? If it doesnt spray right then add a couple caps of reducer.Does this sound right? He also said this color looked a little transparent so dont be afraid to maby spray up to 10 coats? Does this all sound right? It is a single stage nason.Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

When you have a single stage metallic the paint has two characteristics... 1.) It has color like blue or green etc. and 2.) It also has metallic particles floating around in the color. If applied "perfectly" the particles are distributed evenly and the paint is smooth and glossy but there's a problem getting these two characteristics to work together. When trying to get a high gloss the paint is applied more wet and the metallic tends to sink in the color causing the paint to become darker, this is called mottling. So, in order to get an even color, you need to apply the paint more dry and this will cause it to have less gloss.

When applying a two stage paint you can apply the metallic base coat more dry because you then spray your glossy clear coat on top. But even when spraying a two stage metallic you need to be careful not to cause mottling of the base coat which can be caused by uneven application of the base or by applying the clear before the base has dried properly.

I haven't used those particular paint products but if it were me I'd follow the PAINT Manufacturer's recommendation. You may be able to find some details on the web. Using the guy at a parts counter as your expert advice may not work out but if he knows his products he may be ok while the manufacturer has the real info that you need.

He gave me some paper work with the paint.should have all the mixing info on it I hope.Here is the color.I let my wife pick it.We almost ended up with blue star burst but she picked this instead.Hope it turns out ok.

for acrylic enamel I use the tack an whack method and never have a mottling problem or runs. Mist a coat on first, wait about 2 minutes and then start with your full wet coat and just follow the spec sheet carefully.

I thought I read to put your coat on and then mist? Then some one said to not mist or it will dull the shine? Whats the best way? Mist first?

Misting after it dulls the shine. The tack and whack I use doesnt dull anything, just helps the a/e adhere better. Some people do the same thing with clear. I only do this for ss or a/e. Len is correct on that, dont mist after. Mist to start with, it'll do wonders for you
