Steps in paint removal?????

I am stripping a 65 GTO with 80 grit where I can, and chemical srtipper in areas where the 80grit will not go with the sander. Weekends are the only times to work on the car. I plan on using Picklex 20 to stablize the metal before epoxy priming.

With my limited time to work on the car, is this the best method. Cost is a big factor as well as time.
Should I do a panel at a time as far as stripping,then pickle x, and move on to another section?? How can I be sure and get rid of the chemical stripper from the areas I have to use it on??

I am just learning this paint thing and any help is much appreciated. I love this forum.

By the way, the roof of the car had some paint lifting problems when I got the car. When I started stripping with the 80 grit, there are some black blotch areas on the roof , rust , but not pitted. The 80grit will not take it down to shiney rust free metal. Will the Picklex take care of this??

Once the surfaces are stripped apply the Picklex, work it in with a scuff pad then wipe it off and allow it to dry. The metal will be protected as long as it doesn't get wet.

You should be able to remove stripper residue by using water then a grease and wax remover. The problem with removing stripper is one of the reasons I hate using it but in some areas it can't be avoided so remove it as soon as it has done it's job and don't let it dry on the surface or get into areas where it will be difficult to clean.

I dont know what climate you live in but where i am the humidity is very high all year around. The "Rust converters" dont work. Period. If you want to do it right sandblast the rust chemical strip the paint etch prime than epoxy it.

Your car will never amount to anything and you should give it to me immediately to save you all the work.

Seriously, I would advise you to use as little chemical stripper as possible and with your limited time on the car, don't strip more than you can protect at the end of each weekend session on the car. It's easy to get ahead of yourself. You need to also have a good plan when you use the stripper so that it does NOT run all over a surface that you finished the week before. There are hundreds of cracks and crevices for this crap to get into so make SURE it's removed especially in door jambs, etc. Keep it away from the vent area at the cowl.

Is the rear window and windshield removed? Guaranteed to have holes especially in the lower areas in the back and rust around the molding clips (caused by poor clips for that era).

Post some pictures of the car and keep posting here as you have my favorite car. Henry
