Default Firewall repair advice needed on my 66 Chevelle

Hey guys! I am new to metal body work and am not sure what to do here. I have a wire fed mig welder but I have very little experience with it. I really want to do this myself but not sure how to go about it. Here are some of my questions.

What guage metal do I need to use for the patch?
How do I make a pattern for the patch?
How do I hold the patch in place while welding it?
Do I weld it from the outside, inside or both?

    Thanks!
    Wade

cut a square out of the rusted piece, trace your old piece onto new metal with a sharpy then cut it out while leaving extra metal on the side with curve. Leave more just in case. Then trace the curve on the other side of the opening to match. Flip it around and use that to trace it onto the new metal you have. Cut it to shape then tack it in. Once you have it tacked in all around tack it hot to weld the seam solid. This video might help. This video shows a traced opening with cardboard and a scriber but it's basically the same. When using a sharpy the only difference is that you may need to shave it down more.

funny cause I know for a fact a lot of people on this site that talk a big ball game can't do a simple open butt weld patch. I have the proof but go ahead and make a fool out of yourself.

Btw, what does pdr have to do with welding in a patch? Talk about out of your realm.

btw, how would YOU weld in this patch? YOU HAVE NO CLUE! I can have that looking completely factory in less than one hour while you fricken joker worry about some patch you have to buy. Pitiful. Don't call yourself a bodyman.

Sorry Wade I should have read the title of the thread. Since the repair is in an area where it doesn't need to look pretty you can just cut a proper size piece of metal and weld it on the surface of the existing metal. I would use 18 or 20 gauge metal and I would cut that rust out so that I have a nice straight edge to weld to inside and out. Use a good seam sealer and you won't need to weld it solid.
