Durablock 7003 problems

I have a sputtering problem with my new 7003 gun, particularly spraying high-build Slicksand primer (from Evercoat), using both 1.9 and 2.2 nozzles. I have removed all non-HVLP fitting from my lines. I have played with incoming pressure. Both of these have helped a bit.

On the 7003 there is an air adjustment knob on the handle. I have found no commentary on this knob. When I tried to adjust it was really tight (had to use pliers to loosen it). I found a bunch of crud inside (??). It seems that it was all the way in. I assume this would be a major restriction to the air flow. Since I have seen no commentary or instructions on this I assume this knob needs to be open 100%. Is this true? I have not tried playing with this - I will this afternoon.

While I haven't sprayed any real heavy primer with the 7003 but we do spray epoxy and 2K primer with it regularly without any problems. Be sure to clean it well right after you're done spraying or any gun would act up.

The air control knob at the bottom of handle is rarely used and, in most cases, should be fully open when you use the inlet pressure regulator that comes with the gun.

Gun sputtering is usually a problem with air getting into liquid stream before it reaches the tip where it comes out of the gun. Make sure your cup and fluid tip are on tightly. Don't soak the gun body when you clean any gun because it can distroy the seals. Look at the diagram below and make sure you have the #4 seal in place and if you've been soaking the gun in thinner you may need to replace that gasket and #8. Also if the problem persists and you've been soaking the gun you may be able to tighten the needle packing (#9) to help eliminate the problem.

The #4 seal is the rubber o-ring on which the air cap seats, correct? There is no seal between the fluid tip and the gun body. I will check all seals... that may be part of my problem. I am curious about the air adjustment knob, though, as it was all the way in and I did not check it. I'll check all of these things and hopefully all will be fine.
