    Default 66 Charger

    Hello everyone.
New to posting on this site but have been lurking for a while, I am a newbe to the body and paint work, but have been involved with muscle cars my entire life. I will be asking a ton of questions in the next while. I will start with the back ground on this car. It was dipped and primed before I got it and had sat in that state for many years. I have repaired the rear 1/4 panels as no repos are available for this car. I am now going to finish the underside. I just was loaned a rotisserie so that will make life much better. I am hoping to have a very nice car when I am finished but not a trailer queen. I want to drive it. I have reprime the whole car in with valspar primer/filler. The underside will be mostly undercoated (rearsection) and painted over. Then I plan on painting the engine bay and inner fenders. Then the car gets the driveline and suspension reinstalled. I will put the car back on the ground to finish installing the doors/fenders/hood and decklid. The inside of the doors and other parts will be sprayed while off. Then painting the car as a whole. This is my plan. I know that I have missed many steps.
I will have questions on blocking and color sanding and painting as I get that far.
    Enjoy the photos

Yes, the rotisserie sure helps, I wish I had one when we did the Road Runner pictured below. We had to have quarters cut from a car in Washington State and shipped to NJ because we couldn't find new or local parts.

    Default Why undercoating?

WELCOME to the best site on the net!!! I would pay extra attention to the right primer(s) and seam sealers and attack any sign of rust anywhere. Hell, you can sit in a chair and tend to areas of concern. Just use the best materials you can get.

You should also go the the CLASSROOM page on this site from the HOME Page. Lots of information there for you AND prior to painting a good idea would be to pick up:

    Spray Painting 101 DVD Link

Two hour video packs a lot of information for you also. Take advantage of the many positions you can put the car and good luck. Keep us updated. Henry

The only reason that I was going to undercoat is to prevent (slowdown) any chipping of the paint leading to problems later on. I was going to do the wheel wells, the underside of the trunk extensions behind the rear wheels and maybe above the gas tank. Basically from the rear axle back.
I will look into the painting video.

Nice Road Runner, is it your's? or did you do it for a customer? Like to see more photos of it.
    Thanks

It was a customer's car. I don't have time to work on my own cars.

If you click on the picture in my previous post you'll see a lot of before, during and after pictures of that car.

Jeff, I understand you want to do all you can at this point to make things last. I posted a link below of a Father & Son restoration of a Mustang that you can follow as a guide to what pertains to you.
On one post I saw the son under the car with a BUZZ bomb and got scared of what he could be doing. Then I found out that Len had them in control. You could benefit from many parts of the postings. Undercoating makes more problems then it actually solves. We live in an autobody chemical world that is available to you today. Hope this helps your project. Henry

Thanks Henry, just read the father son thread beginning to end, very cool. It has given me some ideas already.
    Cheers

can you explain your concerns regarding undercoating. I was going to spray the wheel wells and inside of fenders with paintable undercoating (after epoxy primer) for sound deadening and chip resistance. I would still paint the undercoating body color. If I'm creating a potential problem, I'd love to better understand that.

Thanks in advance for all the helpful forum posts.

The main problem with thicker undercoats is that they tend to crack and lift off the surface which allow water to get trapped between them and the metal and CAUSE rusting. Some two part undercoating products can work well; a lot of people use two part truck bed liner as undercoat because it's pretty tough stuff but even with this product you need to apply it properly.

Undercoating had its place through the years with some good and most bad. On new cars my father bought there was a lot of undercoating in the trunk area. However, I've seen where the stuff got sandblasted from being on the road and the stuff started to peel (ever so slightly) and allowed the dampness to begin its path to take up residence between the metal and the tar. Then to make matters worst, just to 'spruce' things up some people would detail their ride and hit the wheel wells and undercarriage with MORE undercoating and that's when the real problems began.

I think with todays paints and quality coatings there is no need for the undercoating. I will say not all of it is bad and I'm sure many pros on the site would use it without a second thought. I don't like it and won't use it and it's a real pain to get off. If you ever take a car through motor vehicle inspection you would find they will not tolerate newly applied undercoating PRIOR to inspection as they think you are hiding something. Henry

    Nice Charger!

Like others have said, this is the BEST site for body/paint advise. I read this site religiously while doing my body/paint and learned a wealth of information.

    Good luck with your Charger!
