Chrome Trim Issues

I'm working on exterior chrome trim that has been buffed poorly. The chrome layer has been buffed through in spots exposing the nickel plating. If I buff the trim (low carbon not stainless) to a chrome like finish can it be clearcoated for protection or will the clear not adhear well?

I've never had any luck applying clear to chrome, it always cracks or peels off. I've heard that there is a clear made for this purpose but I've never tried it.
