Anyone use this stuff? Is it any good? How to?
Anyone use this stuff? Is it any good? How to?
I'll be interested in the replies. I currently have a 38 YO Ford truck door panel stripped and coated with OSPHO. I've used it for years on other than vehicle paint preparations where the finished product was not as critical.
Well then I guess we just guess, it must be just as good as Piclkel x20, since phosphoric acid is the ingrediant, it said on the instructions to just apply and wipe off let dry. But its most likely best to rinse it off with water. Its not real expensive about $10 a gallon if memory serves.
It has obviously been a while since you purchased anyI went to buy a gallon just last week and Sherman Williams wanted $12/qt for it and only had it in qts. Last I bought I know for a fact I paid less than $15./gal and I beleive it was $12./gal. I think the first Ospho I bought was $9./gal but that purchase was at Ace but my local Ace no longer handles Ospho.
I did pick up some Chemprep at a local hardware store to try on my tractor stuff, $13./gal. It has mil specs listed and seems to be about the same as Ospho.
Nothing that I've found comes close to Picklex 20. I've used several other products over the years and I'd rather pay to have the penetrating power of Picklex than have some weak product that doesn't even do half of the job it's supposed to. There may be other products that can do the same job but I haven't found one yet. I used Ospho for years before I found Picklex and I can tell you that there is no comparison.
I'd like to use pickelx but the price is pretty high.
The good stuff always costs more. I also use Picklex 20 on body panels to be sure. Now if I were going to paint a brake drum that had a coating of surface rust I would use something else. After wire brushing well I would use some Corroseal on it which actually has no phosphoric acid in it. I found out about it last month when I was watching some guys painting a ship in the Reserve Fleet. They used it to kill surface rust before applying their two part epoxy mastic. Costs $52 per gallon so I ordered two to try out. Perfect location the deck of a ship. Nothing but tightly adhered surface rust left and I applied it at 8-10 mils thick. Thirty minutes later it is dry and the rust now all black and converted. Has a 30 day open window to top coat. I was impressed. On a vehicle I might use it on like a frame of a truck.
