    Default Compressor problem

This compressor is about 3 years old and has had very little use,any ideas on what caused this damage. It is a 5 hp 2 stage Devair.

Looks like that metal piece that's screwed down (pressure release of some sort maybe) broke the end off somehow and got busted up and smashed between the piston and the bottom of the head. You can see the shadow of it's original shape in your picture. I highlighted the area I'm talking about in the pic below.

    Roger,
The flat plate that had the piece break off is a " reed valve. " It's an easy fix, as long as there is no other major damage to other parts. Call the manufacturer or a local compressor parts place for the reed valve. It just screws on.

So where is the rest of that busted in half valve ? There is nothing you did wrong and there is nothing you could have done to prevent that valve from braking like that. For lack of a more refined statement - "Sh*t happens". Obviously you're going to need a new piston and piston rings as well as a new valve set (pretty inexpensive). I see there are vertical marks in the cylinder wall, can you feel those marks with your fingernail ? If the answer to that is - no - then run a ball hone up and down in the cylinder a few times to get rid of those vertical marks and put new cross hatching on the cylinder wall. IF you can feel those vertical marks in the cylinder wall with your fingernail then it has to be honed out by a professional and go to the next size up new piston.

Yes i thought that was the valve, but as you can see in the picture there is a lot of damage to the piston and the cylinder is scored, not sure if the head would be resuable.

The piece that came of the valve was crushed into very small pieces and the cylinder will need to be honed.

    Charger,
In light of what you have to do to get things right again, it does not look that bad.
I have seen much worse like a valve stick through a piston or a connecting rod
    that broke.
