Thread: Urethane Primer over bare metal

Default Urethane Primer over bare metal

Should I put an epoxy primer down (ppg DP48LF) before using a primer surfacer (ppg K36)? I have some bare metal spots exposed and was wondering if it's over kill to epoxy prime first. I will be sealing with epoxy once I work the urethane primer prior to top coating....Thanks

Some filler primers can be used direct to metal but many cannot. Read the primer manufacturer's tech sheet for the use of their product. I normally use Glasurit products and I spray epoxy primer on first but it's not necessary with all of their 2K primers.

The sheets were a bit confusing to me. It says it can be applied over steel as long as its had a two-step metal treatment but it doesn't say what those two steps are. Would those two steps be sanding and degreasing or degreasing and some sort of metal prep?

I have no idea what they are referring to. We have a one step metal treatment (Picklex 20) which etches and protects the metal and can be primed over but I don't know what the two step would involve.

The two step metal treatment is a cleaner/conditioner process that essentially does the same thing as Picklex 20 in a more labor intensive manner. You should etch, epoxy, or "treat" the bare metal first.
