Thread: best primer to use on fiberglass

Default best primer to use on fiberglass

What is the best primer to use on fiberglass surfaces? .. Should all the old original factory primer be removed from the body, or can it be sprayed over with the new primer material?

The car is a '64 Corvette. I want to make sure the painter does it right!

    Thanks

Any urethane primer surfacer should be just fine. Even a poly primer would be ok if the body is wavy

I usually remove most of the old primer but leaving a little won't hurt. Since fiberglass is always wavy I scuff the surface with some 180 grit paper then spray a coat of Slick Sand then guide coat and block sand to get the surface perfectly flat then I epoxy prime to seal the surface before I apply color.

Thanks for the info. I've still got a ways to go, but getting there.

If you can keep the surface area, primer and air over 70 then I'd highly recommend Claussen ALL U NEED polyester primer.
