Default Binks M1-G Prime spray gun

The next item on my long list to buy was a primer gun. I was leaning toward one of the finishline guns. I was in my garage today showing my moms husband the room I plan on turning into a paint booth, when he said "hell, we have a spray gun in the closet I got for $5 at a yard sale". I figured it would be in rough shape or some really cheap gun from HF.

When I opened it I was pretty surprised. Its brand new and looks like its never been used.

It says is a Binks M1-G Prime spray gun. I've searched on google and this site and can find the Binks M1-G gun all over the place. http://binks.com/Products/SprayGuns/...0/Default.aspx

But I haven't seen anything about a M1-G Prime spray gun. Has anyone heard of or used this gun? Will it be a good primer gun? It came with a 1.7 tip.

I wouldn't hesitate to use if for your dedicated primer gun.

Awesome! Thanks Len! I just spoke with a guy yesterday about a good price on unpainted fairings for my bike. I told him I want them without primer. Is there a certain primer you guys would suggest for use on ABS plastic? They will be freshly molded so I don't foresee any major issues. Any special cleaning needed to remove any mold release residue they might have?

    Thanks guys,
    Dennis

Actually you don't need primer on plastic you need "adhesion promoter".

Wash the parts with hot water and Dawn Liquid dish washing detergent, dry them then use a grease and wax remover by spraying it on and absorbing it off the parts using paper towels. Scuff the parts lightly using 320 or finer paper then clean and spray with adhesion promoter, allow it to dry a little then apply your color.

    NOTE:
You need flex additive in hardened paint for flexible plastic parts.

Check the size tip you have and know that is/was produced as a topcoat gun.
A long lost super guy from this site DZD (DonZDon) from Texas could afford any gun he wanted for his many many projects but insisted his M1G was the absolute best.
Just a headsup to you before it gets ruined with primer. Henry

Ah very cool. I didn't think normal primer was needed since there's no metal to bond to. So I can use most paints as long as I add a flex additive?

Thank you Henry. It came with a 1.7 tip. Isn't that normally a primer size tip? Also, does primer ruin a paint gun even if I clean it well after use? I already bought a really good top coat gun, but if this sprays great then I could use my Tekna as a dedicated clear coat gun and buy a cheap primer gun as I had originally planned.

    What's your guys opinion?

Yes, for flexible parts you can use standard color and clear with flex additive.

The 1.7 tip is for primer, it would be too big for most top coats.

I agree with Len and that's why my first question to you was what size tip does the gun have?
Being a 1.7, it would NOT be desirable for clear and a little too big for base. BINKS was a stand alone company before Devilbiss bought them out. Can you get a small tip for base coat I don't know.

DO NOT run primer through the TEKNA. Keep that as a dedicated topcoat gun. What I mean about primer ruining a gun is, primer gets into cavities of a gun that just make it harder to clean out for a switch from primer to clear. Primer guns should be good running not top of the line clearcoat guns and have the appropriate tip size to handle the primer you are using.

So, no, primer does not RUIN a gun but can significantly reduce the positive affect that a good clearcoat gun has when running primer through it then expecting a 100% performing gun when shooting clear. Clear guns get built up enough with clear let alone primer in them. Henry

I had one and this IS a primer gun (and a pretty good one at that). The topcoat version of the M1-G is RED in color.

The topcoat M1-G was sort of a strange bird. It was a low air requirement gun and competed with the Sharpe Platinum. Both were fairly slow guns.

    Awesome, thanks guys!

Na, the Tekna will never see primer. I plan on using her for color and clear. I did notice that all the MG-1s I found online were red. I hope the parts are interchangeable between the two. It'll make it easier to get parts if needed. Ill use the MG-1/Tekna combo until I can afford another nice gun for color only and then use the Tekna for clear only.

Man I can't wait to start painting lol.

    Thanks guys,
    Dennis

Compuzen, can you tell us what model the fluid and air nozzles are? I know there are two different 1.7mm fluid nozzles, the 97 and the 97F. I have the normal M1G and it has the numbers etched into them.

I'm interested in putting the same nozzle combo on a normal M1G to convert it to a "prime" model (since they seem impossible to find).

If I were you I would get whatever nozzle combos quick.
The Binks M1-G is a discontinued model. It's about 10 years old. SprayGunWorld
advertises it but when you try to purchase it there is a canned email you receive
that suggests another type of gun because "we are currently out of stock".
I think that it is unethical to suck you in like that.

DeVilbiss purchased Binks a few years ago so you may be able to get some inside info by calling the DeVilbiss customer support number. 800-445-3988. When the recorded message start hit #1 and when the next message starts hit #4. You'll want to talk to Mike if possible and tell him I told you to call.
