Default Cheap sources for sheetmetal and what gauge for classics?

Seems like 18 gauge would be right but not sure. Hardware stores only care 16 and 22 gauge. Would like to get the real deal for now on and stop cutting up fenders and stuff.

I'm assuming a sheet metal recycler? What a good price for a square foot?

    Any advice much appreciated.

Go to the yellow pages site and search for steel or steel distributors in your area.

Stay away from hardware stores for sheet metal. They rob you blind on those little sheets they sell. The steel supplier that's near me probably isn't the cheapest place around, but I think the last time I bought a 4'x4' sheet of 18, it was under $40.

I get metal at a good price from my welding materials supplier where I get my gas.

    I hope you meant 4 ft. x 8 ft.

I think the $40 that I stated before may have been for the 14 gauge piece I bought last time.

That's right Roger, price depends on the gauge of the metal.

mooch will get a laugh about this. but i use metal i cut from old washers and dryers. it is good flat metal. you need to make sure to sand off all the paint before priming it. the enamel the facory uses is crap.

The steel in the old washers and dryers is really good . I have used the boxes they use for cable tv outside when I need a piece with a nice curve in it . I use to buy all my steel sheets at a buddies auction but no longer go .

Nothing beats the steel used in old American cars in my opinion . Of course it is too thick for modern cars for those I would just use alum foil .

And tech i am anything but cheap . Since i no longer do anything I just gave away a couple hundred pounds of flat sheet to a buddy .

thanks for rubbing it in. Maybe I'll just stop by for your washer and dryer and leave you one of these, old timer. Brings back memories, doesn't it?
