Default It's Official Hookit II is Going Away

Hookit II will be no more by the end of the year. I got this right from the horse's mouth at 3M. There are a couple of reasons for this, the most important being that the new clean sanding discs cannot be made from film or plastic backed paper. There is no way to punch the tiny holes that these use in either mylar (255L) or the Hookit II system.

The death of Hookit II isn't that big of a deal to me but here's the real problem. If you have a big stock of Hookit II paper you better get yourself some extra Hookit II pads as the attachments are going away too. I've got several cases of Hookit II P3000 Trizact. I'm glad that I've got a significant stash of Hookit II backing pads for these discs as they will not be available once the hammer comes down. So stock up now and be prepared if you like me have a significant quantity of Hookit II paper. Nothing worse than having paper and nothing to put it on.

according to economic theory, when a product is being phased out, we should expect price drops and clearances?

    Is there a perfect substitute?

It will change to regular hook and loop.

It figures, I just stocked up on Conversion Pads.

What is the benefit of the Hookit II system anyways? I would be much happier with the regular hookit system. Less items to deal with, better sticking together between the pads. No more conversion pad and its extra cost.

I'm all for it to go away.

I like Hookit II. The Hookit II system attaches the paper much more securely to the pad without the paper moving about on the pad during sanding as often happens with regular Hookit. It's also much easier to remove the disc. What I like best of all is that if you forget to put a piece of paper on the pad and start sanding with it you hurt nothing. If you do this with a normal Hookit pad you'll tear all of the hooks off of the pad within 5 seconds.

I'll miss Hookit II but I'll get over it.

I think that Hookit II was mostly about trying to make more money for 3M.

I have a question maybe you can answer. Why would 3M put out Hook-it II and sell it with their automotive and woodworking products but NOT sell the Conversion Pad in their automotive line? When I asked jobbers in my area this question they don't have an answer except to refer to 3M as the devil in marketing.

I guess if you are the best (Or nearly the best) you can do what ever you want. 3M might be over priced, but no one can argue with the quality

Basically because they didn't have to.

3M's hold in the woodworking market is not nearly as strong as their hold in the automotive aftermarket. 3M has serious woodworking competitors in Klingspor, Pacific Abrasives, Deer and many others. In automotive much less so.

Also, 3M for awhile was giving away Hookit II pads in the automotive market to lock customers in. Why make conversion pads and make it easy for these customers to switch back to non-proprietary velcro (Hookit) discs.

I remember the "bonus" trizact discs. I didnt have a clue as to what they were for so I threw quite a few away
