    Default need advice on polyester primer

    I am working on 1972 Karmann Ghia right now....

    i have ordered Slick Sand from my supplier today, but i have received Feather Fill G2 instead.....i have never worked with this before.... the front clip has very oval surface, hard to sand , but it is not bad, it is all block sanded, contour is close to original but i dont feel like applying glazing putty over this oval surface.the last coat of filler is Gold Rage...i will apply quality primer surfacer on the whole car after sanding down feather fill or slick sand...

    i have applied upol primer with roller on all areas where body work was done, this is an old car, the customer is paying for a paint job, not a restoration, so he was not willling to pay for stripping the car down to bare metal.....i want primer to get absorbed into old substrate...i will apply primer again over the whole car with a spray gun.

    my questions are....

    Should i return feather fill and get slick sand or is it the similar product with similar sanding properties and hold out?...

    Does sllick sand or feather filll shrink less than regular primer surfacer?....

    Can i apply pollyester primer over Upol primer iin some areas where extra thickness is needed?..

    The Feather Fill is a good product but it won't give you as much film build as quickly as the Slick Sand will.

    I haven't had a shrinking problem with either SS or FF. Just be sure that the temperature is over 60 degrees F and you mix the correct amount of hardener.

    Yes, you can apply polyester primer over Upol primer.

    thanks for info, Len..

    I tested FF and SS and slick sand has better build up....i used Slick Sand and applied it on the front nose of Karmann..i am impressed with it...i reduced it with urethane reducer about 5 %, i used 1.8 nozzle primer gun, it worked fine and it sprayed almost like a sprayable putty .....excellent thickness, no show trrough of old paint and sands easy, especially useful on hard to sand oval surface......

    "Sprayable putty" is exactly what it is! I am a big fan of Polyester primer IF you really need it. It has the capibilities to bury a quarter taped to the fender! If you don't need that much filling I recommend against it. These are just basic rules, not directed at you.

    After trying it out, i will use Slick Sand for special jobs now....i used it on karmann ghia job to cover front clip because it turned out to be soo much easier to level round surfaces and sand....after sanding SS with 120, i just put two coats of primer and everything became smooth..

    @Brian....
    i will use it when i have big areas of body work on oval, round, not even surfaces...and also i think it will be good on doors of new cars, especially japanese models, which tend to flex and concave in considerably.....less pressure should be applied with large block when leveling than to try out to sand putty or rage gold over big area...

    Also, even Upol primer 20 20 has great built up, almost 3 mil, so it can also be used instead of Slick Sand or polyester primers....
