Thread: B/C used as sealer question

  1. #1

Default B/C used as sealer question

doing a three stage pearl and was wondering if my white B/C would work as a sealer over my polyester primer before spraying my mid coat orange ?

i know the polyester is somewhat porous but i would think the white base coat would fill and seal it for the mid coat and eliminate dry spots in the mid coat ?

or do i have to seal the polyester ? basically want to know if a B/C paint would work as a sealer ?
i have extra B/C paint and would like to use it up instead of buying a sealer .
    all dupont products .

Short answer, No! Longer answer, clear coat will act as a sealer then you can re-apply some base and go on from there, but base coat alone is too thin and the texture difference will show through. Three stage is finicky enough that you don’t want to have bad spots to go back to fix when you should be done.

I agree with Bob, you're spending a lot of time and material to skip a step and risk having problems. However it also depends on what primer you're taking about, if it's polyester spray filler then you will definitely need a sealer but if it's a "good" 2K primer you may get away without sealing. Without experience with the products you're using I'd highly recommend purchasing a good sealer.

use the value shade sealer like the paint most likely calls for. Its very cheap insurance and works great.

I'm not familiar with the DuPont sealer, is it mixed with a hardener?

    thanks guys .
the last three stage pearl i did i used i think it was nason select 2k urethane primer ? it was yellow .
i then went right over it with the white B/C and then the mid coat , it turned out great but i had some shrinkage i did not like a few months later .
that is why i thought of using the polyester this time to avoid the shrinkage .
i do not want to use any epoxy primer sealer because of the mess it creates .
the car is VERY straight fiberglass and i hate to put a big build up with the polyester primer ? i really don't need a lot of fill , guess i could thin it down ?
i am kind of stuck on what way to go ? i have all the product except for a sealer .

The sealer helps stop the substrate or primer from absorbing the base coat and thereby helps stop shrinkage down the road. If your primer is NOT real porous and your base coat won't shrink into it then you can probably skip the sealer. However without knowing the characteristics of your primer or your substrate it's difficult to say for sure what the outcome will be. IOW, it's a crap shoot and only you can decide if it's worth he risk not to seal the surface.

ok so sealer it is . that is why i had the shrinkage last time with the 2k even though the paint guy said i could shoot right over the 2k .

another thing i am thinking of is my recoat window with my white B/C .
i have a lot of edging to do and no way i can make it in 24hr window on the whole car .
so after my edging taping and reassemble getting ready to spray the whole outside can i just scuff the white B/C on the outside and move on to the mid coat .

appreciate the help guys ! i only spray a car about every two years and always battle myself on what way to go ! LOL . and i always do the most difficult there is with the three stage pearl metallic . be alot less stress if i just went with a BC CC but that wouldn't be any fun LOL .
