Thread: chipped already!

    Default chipped already!

Went out this morning to wash the car down and found a stone chip low down in the middle of the hood, sprayed a week ago BC/CC.

I guess a lot of your projects sit off-road for that crucial month while paint fully cures whereas this is my daily drive so I had no choice but to drive after a couple of days curing. Its not like I drive too close to the guy in front so I get stones flying up, but I did have to drive a couple of hundred on fast roads to go on holiday so I guess I just caught one there.

The solution I know is to feather out the chip, blend and reclear the whole panel, but what's the point when I know the odds are it's gonna chip somewhere else? It makes me feel like going back to chip filling with activated clear and finding something less frustrating to do with my time.

That sucks brother. When you redo it you can harden your base for improved durability, also watch you mil thickness. Too much or to little and she's more prone to chip.

It won't matter how long the paint is on the car, if it gets hit with a stone it's going to chip. The thicker the paint the larger the chip tends to be.

Didn't have anything to do with how long after painting. The harder it gets the easier it chips. That chip was going to happen whenever. On the Dupont site in their troubleshooting section they recommend flex additive to reduce chipping.

Daily drivers are supposed to have chips.

You do not even have to drive it to get chips. We picked up my sons Mustang on Saturday. We had done the prep and the shop went over it and fixed what we missed then did the paint

In doing that they removed the hood and trunk hinges. When we picked up the car it was assembled and all the panel alignments looked good. While in the driveway at home my son noticed a chip where the hood had rubbed the cowl. Last night he was installing the taillights and when he finished and closed the trunk lid it hit and chiped the paint behind the rear window.

I told him to give it up for the night and I would come over and look at it in the morning. I found that both the hood and trunk hinges were loose at the mounting and had slid back and allowed the lids to touch the rear of the openings.

I also found 6 shims between the hood hinges and the hood that were not there when the car went into the shop. I removed the shims and adjusted the hinges properly and all is fine. I also found the lower shims missing on both fenders and bolts missing on the fender brace inside the door jamb.

The guy who painted it did an great job, whoever hung the sheet metal back on the car did not do such a great job.

They did say when we picked it up that if we chip anything puting it back together bring it in and they would fix it, little did we know that we would have 2 chips less than 4 hours latter from things that were already on the car.

The first chip always hurts the worst but 2 in 4 hours and not our fault is worse.
