I am hoping to paint the pony in the following emblem black and I was hoping that someone would go over my plan.

I have some spare black AE that I plan to use. Not the best but I have almost a hlaf quart and nothing to do with it. My plan was to slightly rough the surface with either sandpaper or a scothbrite pad. Then very carefullly cut/tape around the emblem with the 3m fine detail tape. Next spray some PPG expoxy for good grip (pretty heavily reduced to keep the details in the emblem) then to spray 1-2 coats of AE. Does this seem like a good course of action or is there something better to use to avoid chipping problems? I'd like to skip the primer step but I don't want the paint to come off the chrome in a short time.
