Thread: What is SS good for?

Default What is SS good for?

I painted my motorcycle gas tank with some MTK SS, and about a week or so later, I got the bike all back together, and found that my gas cap has a slight leak, but it was enough to eat the hell right out of the paint.
Now, I`m almost willing to bet the farm that even cars tend to get a little gas on the paint near where ya gas them up at, so what good is SS paint? it does`nt hold up to gas AT ALL. so what does body shops use it for? Do they clear coat over top of it? I seen on the spec sheet that you can clear over it, but if you do that, whats the point in using a SS in the first place? sorry, but i just had to vent a little.
anyway, what should i do now, strip the tank back down, re paint, and clear over my SS MTK? I`m a bit tight on money, but have enough SS MTK paint left over, and i also have some MC260 quick clear on hand. so???
    Thanks,

This is a common problem for motorcycles. If you search the forums they sell this stuff you are supposed to paint around the gas cap that prevents this. If you go to autobody101.com and their forum and ask Reckon he will know what this stuff is called.

SS is good for pretty much trains planes and autos.

The problem you experienced with the gas degrading the paint was either
due to crap paint or the paint was not fully cured.

I used omni MTK, with the correct recomended hardener and reducer, and let it dry for about 10 days, before I ever put the bike back together. My gas cap aparently has a bad gasket, so I ended up with a small stream of gas that had ran down the tank, which had basicaly ate the paint.

I saw Nub Graphix use a coating around the gas cap area on an episode of American Chopper...all I remeber was Nub saying to Paulie not to touch around the gas cap for a few hours since the coating was still tacky...
