Greetings from Canada! I have been checking this site out for a while, and now I need some advice. I'm going to be repainting a 93 volvo 850, original colour (I don't want the hassle of jambs, etc.) I have an account set up with a PPG dealer and am wondering what line of paint to use. I don't want a cheap single stage job, I want a bc/cc. What PPG "line" would you recommend for primer, colour, clear, etc.? Price is more of a factor than quality, as it's more less going to be a winter car. I would like to be a little more informed from people who arent trying to sell me the products. Thanks.

Always a pleasure to help out a fellow canuck. (as long as your a leafs fan!)

I've used their deltron line before, The only real issue I had with it was poor color matching. For your situation spraying a complete, it wouldn't matter & would likely be a good economical choice. I really liked their 2K surfacer K36 & their concept clears (I don't recall the #'s, been a little while since i've used ppg).

Their budget line is OMNI. I've used it with no problems.

O I C, never had to price the stuff. I thought it was their bottom of the barrel line.

Product wise, Deltron is very good...great coverage and durability...

Color match IS another story...with a mixing bank, color matching isnt so bad, but the formulas don't seem to match...i've used the deltron mixing system along side THEIR color chips, and the actual spray out doesnt seem to match the chips. I've had to actually MANUALLY tint the colors, sometimes outside the actual mixing formula to get a blendable color match, costing time, extra product, etc.
For an all over, you shouldnt have a problem is you decide to go with that product. Personally, i do not like the omni clears, which is the ONLY omni product i've used. Others that i know that have used it actually LIKE it for cheaper jobs, but i didnt like the sprayed out gloss, and it didnt seem to buff very well. If price is your main concern, i would go ahead and use the omni line, but if you are looking for a good FINISHED job out of the gun, i'd go with PPG Deltron. PPG also now has another cheap line, SHOPLINE, but i havent had the chance to use it nor do i know anyone that has to get any feedback.

What part of Canada? It'd be great if everyone filled in that little box on their profile so we could see where everyone is.

You can't go wrong with the Omni primers, the MP 170 epoxy followed by the SV 282 High build. Very reasonably priced and work very well. I've never used Omni clears, but had occasion to use their base once and it was fine. Was warned that they should be used for completes only as their color match may not be bang on to original.

I agree with Steve and would add that the Omni clears are good clears ( one is spot and panel while the other is overall clear, I use only spot and panel, even for a full paint because the overall clear takes longer to set up than what I prefer).

You never stated what color your volvo is that you'll be respraying ? If its a solid color (no metallics) then the Omni basecoat should be a good choice. If its a metallic then go with the Deltron DBU or DBC. (Incidentally, the Deltron DBU and DBC for the most part are excellent matching paint. As good or better than any other line of paint I've used including Dupont, R&M etc.).

From Ontario Steve, i'll get around to filling that out in my profile soon.

I found deltron color match not so great, especially compared to the BASF paints I use now. But given manufacturers vary on what colors they do well on it could have just been the type of vehicles we had at the Deltron shop compared to those at the BASF shop.
