What is exactly stages when refers to painting a car? Is refering to the paint or the way the car is going to be painted?

    Default Good Question

Sometimes we forget that not everyone knows all the jargon so it's good that someone asks once in a while.

Top coat paint is applied using different materials and methods, some paint is applied using a solid or metallic color and is sprayed from the gun and dries giving you the desired result. This is "single stage" paint.

Other paint products are sprayed using multiple products like colors and clear. Most metallic colors are sprayed by applying the color then going back and applying the clear (the gloss) on top. This is "two stage" paint.

There are also mid-coats that can be applied (like pearls) to achieve different effects and these can make it three, four, or however many stages it takes to get the desired result.
