    Default Fluid tip size ?

How do you tell when you have the correct fluid tip size for the paint being sprayed. I recently purchased a Sharpe T-1 reduced pressure gun with a 1.6 mm tip, but I think it is too big as I need to turn the fluid adjustment knob in 2-3 turns to avoid getting runs. I spray mostly single stage urethanes and polyurethanes (Dupont Chroma 1 and Imron). 1.6 was the recommended tip for single stage paints, but I think I need to go smaller, maybe 1.4 or 1.3. Any suggestions? Also, what is the difference in spray pattern and finish quality between using a large tip and turning the fluid adjustment knob in and using a smaller tip with the adjustment set fully open ?

Using a tip that is too large for the materials will usually NOT atomize the paint enough to produce a smooth result. If you turn in the needle adjustment it will restrict the amount of paint but won't substantially increase the ability of the gun to atomize. Turning up the gun's inlet pressure can help atomize but can also distort the pattern or cause uneven distribution of paint within the pattern. Most automotive paint products such as single stage, base and clear should be sprayed using a 1.3 or 1.4 tip. We sell tip kits for that gun for $59.50.

Thanks for the info, Len. There are also a couple other things I need to order so I will be giving you a call.

P.S. I found your web site by accident, but it seems very helpful. Looking forward to doing business with you.
