88GT is right, you sanded through the clear and now you can either live with it or repair it properly. A proper repair will be to spray a sealer coat over the problem then spray color base coat over the sealer and blend it into the surrounding color then clear the entire panel. In a body shop that will probably run between $200 to $400 depending on you geographic location and the quality of the shop.

If you want a definitive answer to your question then you need to post a picture of the area. What rubbing compound are you using ? What grit of sandpaper did you use to sand out the scratch. What color, make and model of car are we talking about ?

your options are to paint it or live with it. there are no magic tricks. Bottom line is the more you mess with it the worse its gonna get.

GT 88 is right your car has clear coat no doubt,You have to either live with it or repaint,no tricks and if you keep messing with it you WILL make it worse. If you let it got too long the base coat will oxidize and you will have a permanent dull spot.If it was my car(BMW,It`s a Beemer man!) I would just repaint now Sam.

If I understand your picture you only applied clear coat to the repaired area instead of the entire panel. When you buff this out you will always have a ring around the outside edge of the new clear coat. You need to clear the whole panel.

My understanding is he didnt do any painting at all. He tried to sand out a scratch and went through the clear
