is two coats of clear enough?

98 lexus ls400 black over gray,lite scratches on drivers lower mouldings gray part.. Well removed mlds from car wet sanded with 600 cleaned with thinner then sprayed omni base 3coats then 10min later crossfire hp clear first mist wait 1min then 1st coat heavy op then wait 1 to2mins then second coat looks like glass stopped there and left it to dry,now I'm thinking hmm maybe I should have put 1more coat... Opinions please..

I say lucky because you should avoid the "mist" coat as you describe. No need for that and a mist coat is actually a 'dry' coat which will help determine the texture of the following coats. You can create a rougher finish coats by a prior dry coat or mist coat.

I like 3 good coats of clear and rely on the 3rd coat to satisfy any sanding and buffing. Two coats is good if left alone for UV protection.

Also, you don't wait minutes but by the touch and feel of how the prior coat feels to the touch. If sticky and you can leave a fingerprint then you need to wait longer before the next coat. Henry

From what I learned or understood a first mist coat is neccesary to avoid fisheye and dirt showing etc and you should mist at least once or twice before full coat is applied..well that's what I was shown at the shop I worked at for 1year that I learned most of what I know as my teacher or whatever he was really didn't speak much english well he knew at least five words and I didn't speak any spanish the shop was in juarez mexico so I guess that don't help much either,lol... So after cleaning prepping the surface tapeing and final cleaning with gasoline or thinner or whatever then base I need no mist coat?.. Ever?..really?

No mist coating should EVER be needed, it can cause early paint failure because it doesn't allow the paint to bond properly. If you want to help eliminate problems always clean the surface with a dedicated grease and wax remover (solvent cleaner) don't use thinner or any other non-dedicated products.

DO NOT USE GASOLINE as any form of cleaning agent. You'll be looking for an explosion. There are enough INTENDED products so please, NO GASOLINE.

The only mist coat,and its not a mist coat really,that i put on,is if i am shooting a high mettalic,like silver.I will back the gugn up on the last 2 coats of BASE.The clear goes on wet the first time,and the second coat also.If its a god high solids 2;1 clear,2 coats will work.If its thin 4;1....3 or more.

high solids clear, 2 coats is definately enough. even a low solids is enough if you dont cut and buff too much.
I dont spray a high metalic silver any different than any other metalic color. If you spray it too dry it will come out light because the metalics wont lay down
