How to tint colors?

I never was really taught how to tint or adjust colors and just picked up habits from different painters that I've worked with though the years. Still to this day I haven't met the painter that could look at a color and know exactly what to do to it and adjust it just like that. My question is, is their any websites or books I could checkout to teach me how to tint and adjust colors? Also where I work we spray ppg dbc does anyone know anything I could check out on how to learn how to adjust and tint their colors using their paint? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Also a couple of more quick questions. I had a silver that was to dark and all it had in it was silver, a little blue and a little white. How do you adjust silver to be lighter? Add more silver? Also when tinting colors is it okay to use different toners that are not in the formula?:confused:

this is the way they are teaching it the training centers, I have been tinting this way effectively for years. You will hear many different ways that painters have been taught to tint over the years..ie..killing colors.. It does work for many, but I'm sure theirs a reason their teaching it this way now.


To lighten silvers, generally your flop adjuster and aluminum tints will do it. Each toners gonna effect your pitch & your face differently so its a good idea to get very familiar with your system. contact your rep to get some tinting sheets for your toners. These sheets will identify each of yours toners and tell you the effect each one has in your basecoat. It is also recommended to stay withing formula.
