Can you use the same machine as the one for the steel studs? What about those stud dent pullers? I have seen two types. One is the Studlever by Bill Goos and another kind of looks like a rivet gun...
Yeah, I should have done that while I was sanding. I guess the only way to know now if it will crack again is if I repaint it and the crack shows up again few weeks later :-(
Thanks Bob. The crack I was talking about IS on this car and its the area we were talking about in the picture! (1957 300SL, brand new, recent, high-end paint job, no accidents). As I said earlier....
Thanks Bob.
After carfully reading all your answers, I still have 4 more details that I'm not sure about: The small areas that I feathered down to bare metal have some patches of lead visible too...
Thanks Bob
Just to make sure. In that first picture, how large an area would you take down the paint? Would I feather about an inch below the sharp edge I sanded out so far? Or more? Then, do I...
Hi Bob
Thanks for the product and other pointers. I definitely always spray 2k primer over any repairs and I'm always extremely careful while I block the area. But, I have still seen repairs...
Hi
I am re-painting an almost new, complete, high-end paint job, that was poorly assembled and had at least 10 chips nicks or cracks, so the owner decided to go with a complete re-paint, but I...
Thanks for the good leads. The crack is about 1/4" just below the tail light opening, not at all where you'd expect to find anything. There is nothing visible after I sanded back the thin layer of...
In my case the crack was very visible in the paint and the car was basically not driven at all since the paint job. I now removed the paint and primer and there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with...
That sounds like a reasonable explanation Style. Is it possible that a microscope wouldn't see the crack in my case, since there is no rust and now there are the sanding scratches from when I removed...
Hi
I am re-painting a 1957 MB 300SL that has been recently restored by another shop from the ground up. I am re-painting it now and among other problems, there is a crack about 1 1/2 in. long in...
Thanks Len
The problem I have had when I use one piece of transition tape with a base coat/ clear coat system is that the resulting transition area is very narrow and when I color sand and polish...
Hi Len
Thanks for the good idea. I especially have to think about raising that whole car...I actually only rent a spray booth...
I think maybe you missed that this was a complete new paint job...
Wow Phil
You don't sleep much either.... Yes, they are worth some money, not sure if they came down from their highs these days, but the owner already has a lot of money into this restoration. I'm...
Hi
As a preface, I virtually (pun-intended) learned how to paint with the help of Len's video and this site. About a year ago, I painted my first complete car and this year that 1969 280SL has won...
Thanks very much guys. I took the damnaged area back down to bare metal and was able to feather and build up with about 6 coats of primer (in two seperate days). I hope that's not too much.
...
Len, I fear that this rule applies even when I'd have to paint the whole back half of the car including rear door jambs, just to fix one tiny little chip?....Thanks, Tom
Hi All
After being 99% done with a complete resto with Glasurit 55-line on a 1969 280SL, I had an engine fire that lifted the paint on a portion of the fender. The primer foundation underneath the...
Thanks Len
No. I didn't tint the 285-16 sealer, but it's light gray and so its similar to the light blue/gray metallic base coat I'm going to use. I spot primed one or two areas on the hard top...
Hi
Len, you told me to paint the engine bay base coat straight on top of the old, factory paint, using no sealer. It worked very well and I had no problems hiding the irregular looking prepped...
Thanks again Len
I actually bought your 101 tape a few years ago, when you helped me with my first paint job too, but guess I need to watch it again. Been getting in deeper and deeper since :)
...
Thanks so much Len
I just want to make sure I understood everything correctly:
Are you saying I don't need any primer for the engine bay? Just the base coat straight onto the cleaned up paint?...
Hi All
I'm sorry. This must have been asked before but I spent 2 hours searching and haven't come up with a lot (found a lot of other distraction too on this great site too, of course :)
I...
