I know you have all heard this before, but this car would not exist without the help and assistance from the folks on this site.
Not perfect yet, but we will fix the small problems as we go along....
Thanks Len.
Have watched numerous car shows on TV, "American Hot Rod", "Overhaulin", lots of others and have noticed that when they are prepping for paint,
specifically spreading filler, they always seem to be...
I guess we'll find out when we bend the hood back. Will let you know how it turns out.
Brian, thanks for responding. Should have been more specific, the suggestion was a series (4-6) kerfs at the highest point of the buckle but I like your suggestion a lot better.Have enclosed a couple...
While assembling the hood to the car, after it was painted of course, it became apparent that the center,
probably from having the louvers punched, was buckled. A remedy suggested is to cut kerfs in...
I need to spray the bolt heads holding the fenders on to match the finish and thought about mixing base, clear and hardener then spraying the primered heads. Surely someone has already tried this....
Model #PAFTV560V/O oilless compressor. Bought it used but looked excellent. Knew one of the connecting rods had shattered so got it cheap.
Bought a replacement kit from Devilbiss and repaired it....
If you are planning to color sand and buff would a higher solids content clear be to your advantage??
Thanks.
Ended up using "micro mesh" a grit coated ultra thin fabric you can wrap around your finger.
Rated in AO, I went up to 4000, about 2000 ANSI. Got mine from MSC, a machinests catalogue, they go up to...
Found the answer to buffing the louvers. It is a polishing wheel designed for bench grinders to be used for
plastic. Ultra soft, I used it parallel to the louvers so it doesn't hang up on the edges...
Thanks Len. I'm sure you realized I meant that the base was 1:1 with reducer. PPG's "normal" which is 60-75deg.
Figure I can always wait for the right day to touchup.
Had over 1/2 a quart of base left over when I finished my project so asked local supplier best way to preserve it.
Said "no problem" and put it into two pressurized rattle cans.
Should last forever...
Only ones I could find are circular, do you know of any square pads?? Would you use Trizact or Abralon for hand sanding??
The 3M sponges are square but as far as I can tell only go to 800 (ultra...
Wow, many thanks. I have asked a couple of times "how do you know when the previous grit scratches are gone" and that is the answer.
Now if you can tell me a sure fire way to sand and buff 3" hood...
Got a little to agressive sanding the clear coat on my trunk and cut thru at the very edge.
Sanded the clear with 600, masked off, shot three coats of base to color where the primer
was showing,...
Thanks to everyone who responded. Did a little more digging on air sanders and the answer was obvious in hindsight.
The cfm requirements Air Vantage quotes are to run it continuously at 12K RPM. So...
Don't know why I put in Dynasand when I meant AirVantage. The cfm requirement I sited is from their catalogue.
I tried to run a small air sander with my 80 gal. Devilbiss compressor which is 10.3...
Clear coat is all sanded to 800 getting rid off the peel and dust nibs. Time to progress. While I would love to follow you Pro's
with Dynasand and Trizact to 3000, a compressor that can produce...
PPG uses what they call a "Chromatic gray mixing chart" that is shown on the TDS for DPLV urethane sealers.
It's a mixing scale from G1-G7 using different mixing ratios of the various colors of...
Realized I hadn't been specific enough. The first sanding I do with the 800 production I do move in the manner you show.
Because its dry, I can see that everything is flat and all the peel is gone....
Found lots of posts about moving up in grit size as you color sand but nothing about how long to sand with each one.
I start with 800 production paper because I love the immediate feed back I get on...
I've read enough posts here to know that the longer you wait to color sand clear coats the more effort it takes.
I assume thats because the clear gets harder as it ages. On the other hand, does that...
This was the result of a totally unscientific test I did comparing Deltron DBC base to Omni base.
Both are straight from the can both are moss green metallic. The lack of pigment in the Omni
is...
Thanks Len.
Specifically PPG's DC3021 sealer. The TDS says if not topcoated within 72 hours it must be sanded befor basecoating. How long is that good for?? Have called PPG three times and gotten three different...
Thanks everyone, I sanded and re-based the whole piece. On the subject of basecoat, this is PPG's DBC which uses DX57 activator. Have read elsewhere that lots of folks
just use clearcoat...
My plan was to sand the entire piece with 1500 wet to get a uniform surface over the entire piece then clearcoat. Their is no guarantee if I re-base the same thing won't happen again. Think that...
I have a couple of bugs to remove from a base coat. What grit could I use that won't show scratches under the clear coat??
Thanks.
On youtube, type "3M auto body repair" into search. Has a 6 min. video on doing jambs with transition and foam tape.
Has a ton of other 3M how to videos.
Clear coating will definitely protect aluminum rims, but as you can see from the befor and after photos you will lose about 15%
of the gloss. That is just a byproduct of clear powder coating. To me...
Thanks again, I'll do what everyone recommends.
Was originally planning to start with 1000 wet hoping to save the base. Apparently that is not feasible.
Thanks everyone. Ford Windstar Van, 2002, Metallic Gold. Peeling is on the rear hatch which was obviously repainted at some point. Will post pics tomorrow,
I ran a search but couldn't find anything specific. Is it possible to sand off loose clear and recoat without reshooting base color? My color matching skills are non-existent. Any comments...
Haven"t tried it, I stick to Deltron.
I did a comparison test of PPG paints, comparing Omni to Deltron. As you can see from the
photo it was no contest. Color is the same Moss Green metallic base. Lack of pigment in Omni is obvious....
Thanks for responding. Paint is Deltron, gun is DV+. Will keep a closer eye on the temp. Does that apply to the paint and surface temp as well as the air temp?? Thanks again.
I have been stalling on painting my 75 Mercedes. Color is silver green metallic and have read lots of posts about how metallics must be painted with car assembled so all pieces are oriented to the...
Thanks for the info, all I want to do is extend the lip so it doesn't hit the tire. Grinding the inner edge down may be enough, thats what I'll try first.
Need to make room for these rims. Mine is stock 107 Mercedes these came from an AMG 107. They widened the wheel wells on theirs. Didn't know this when I bought them, offset is too much.
Thanks. I'll check.
I need a body work Video with heavy emphasis on widening rear wheel wells. Any recomendations appreciated.
I have devised a stand that will let me change a piece (doors etc.) that have been removed for painting from vertical to horizontal and back. Picture an old drafting table with a tilting top. I am...
Good to know. So as long as you know you have a 2K primer, wouldn't the best procedure for removing say a ripple in a metallic base coat be to apply remover just on the problem area, strip it off,...
Kleen-Strip KS-3 Premium. Bought at Orchard Supply. As a side note, I bought some Ansell "Barrier" gloves because they hold up to lacquer thinner, also were untouched by the paint stripper.
Omni, 2K epoxy primer. Paint stripper removed 3 coats of clear, 2 coats of base, 2 coats of sealer, 3 coats of G2 and didn't even faze the primer. Nice to know that stuff is under your paint.
DuPont has color chips and paint #'s going back to the 20's. Even have the formulas for mixing.
By going to the 3M site and trying to find the best abrasive disc for paint stripping. I'm leaning toward Imperial Hookit, 80 grit. They say it is there best. Why are there so many choices??
Would...
Ready to spray PPG, Omni, 2K primer (MP-172). TDS from PPG says use 1.3-1.6 tip. When mixed with hardener, the paint came out at 35 secs. with a #2 Zahn cup. DeVilbiss says use a 2.2 tip for that...
