I have used the 3m 8447 pads for years. They work great.

4 fender flares will cover it up for a few years. Out of sight....Out of mind.

Gordon
Well, seems you have made up your mind, so you will find out the consequences, whether you will be allowed or not.
Personally, I would not want people tearing cars apart in there driveways in my...
It sounds like the base color is enamel and the clear coat is lacquer.
The clear coat can probably says on it not to spray over enamel products.

Gordon
The original post states that he is using chromabase. It is not necessary to use the 12305 hardner in base....but you can.

Gordon
Yep, I miss the old Centari w/793 hardner. First coat looked a little dusty, second coat looked not bad.....third coat was clean as a whistle.

If you are painting the front clip, I take it you mean the hood and fenders...??
If you are going to use single stage, since it is black, might as well just paint the entire panels. It is going...
Myself, I would like to find something that gives a fairly thick edge. When I look at vehicles that have been done with Linex, they have a nice thick, clean edge. When I use masking tape and...
Devilbiss has my vote....very nice.

What MartinSr says....
Why go through all the aggravation of trying to blend the clear on a panel like that. Just clear the whole thing and be done with it.

Chromabase is a solvent based basecoat. I don't know if it is readily available anymore. Been replaced by Chromax Pro water based.
Actually, I read in a trade magazine article 5 years ago that the average age of autobody tech in Canada was 57. I was 57 at the time, and am 62 now. Will be thinking of retiring soon, (plan to do...
Since you are doing a complete, and the car is all primed, you should not have any problems.
I have used Dupont (now Axalta) for 40 years.
Like Henry says in his posts, some of the colors are...
Has anybody had any experience with this product. They called me the other day trying to get me interested.

I've always had 'glass' glasses and use lacquer thinner....never any damage.

another thought is to glue the new base right to the old base. I've installed windshields that had the wrong base on because of installing from a different year. I have taken the original bases off...
I echo that. You can use the floor heat for day to day stuff, but when you are painting (depending on your climate) you may want to crank the heat up during painting or after....with the forced air...
I sometimes miss the ol' torch and brazing.
I recently replaced a quarter panel on a vehicle and there was brazing in areas around the rear window.
I decided to braze the sail panel joint. ...
Hi Len....I can't believe you have never used panel boding adhesive. What a time saver, abd fire saver.
I have been using it for about 15 years. Roof panels, quarter panels, box sides, rocker...
x2 on the Norton blue......
I also like to use 2" masking tape along with 3/4".......

No you don't have to clean out your gun.....it will be fine.

Gordon
Well it would have been something to see.

I don't think you'll get any bidders on this job......
Firstly, how long is this going to take will determine the final outcome of the price.
Not many shops would want to do an job of this...
I've been using Dupont forever, and have shot Nason clear over Chromabase, ChromaPremier, and Cromax Pro.....with no problems.

Gordon
Almost impossible....(almost :) )
--
Gordon
I am using Dupont Cromax Pro and loving it.
Blowing air across the panels are an absolute must. Without air movement it takes a long time to dry. With air movement, it dries very fast. High...
Surprising you would have this effect so many years later. You would think the original owner would have spilled gas on the same panel at some point.

Gordon
Looks like a beautiful job.....congratulations on keeping things original....

I have used the Norton blue paper pretty well all my career. Never thought of it as expensive.

I wonder if you just think it is not covered. I have sprayed some colors that when flashed off, didn't look very good, especially reds and black. Cleared them, and they looked great.

Gordon
If you are only painting small or single items, you will have no problems. You would not be able to paint a complete vehicle, as the compressor won't keep up.
I have painted fenders and doors...
Here is a program that I made up awhile back that I use in my shop.

I prints out a nice looking estimate and looks more professional than hand written estimates....
Len, what is this B6040 you are speaking of....

I usually just take my chances on bumper cover. I spray them and then install. It is suprising how many bumper covers don't match right from the factory. I usually try to point this out to the...
I use them several times. I store them in an air-tight container.

As for raising the car for painting, I used to jack up the car and place wheel rims under the wheels of the car (laying them down of course). This seemed to raise the car up just enough for spraying...
I use Dupont products, and they have different colored primers numbering from 1 - 7. 1 being white and 7 being very dark grey. Number 4 is mostly used which is medium grey. Their sealers are...
Yes, that is a good idea. I do this with hail damaged vehicles... I even spray two colors of high build primer.

Gordon
With Dupont Chroma colors its is ALWAYS a good idea to use their valueshade sealer.
Once I painted a red fender, must have put on 8 coats of color over a primer spot. It looked good in the...
Great tip you have shown there MartinSr. You took alot of time to show this.
Thanks,
Gordon
I have use Dupont products for the past 38 years.
We use Nason Clears for cheaper jobs in my shop, and have been able to watch them for a couple years. No problems that I can see. Very nice...
If there is enough material left on there, you would need to sand with 400 enough to get rid of the 220 scratches.

I have used Dupont blender for many years. Usually, I just dump in blender to the last of my clear, spray the edge of the clear. Wait about a minute, and give the edge a shot of straight blender a...
What grit sandpaper can you use with the durablocks, and how does the sanpaper attach.
Are they hook and loop, adhesive...??
Thanks,
Gordon
I'll quite often paint parts off the vehicle prior to installation....
I figure if I gotta spray the edges and jambs first, I might as well spray the whole panel inside and out.
Every once in a...
Another thing you could do is just blend your fenders now. You won't need to paint the hood over. Just prep your fenders, shoot some colour on the top of the fenders where it meets the hood, and...
I have two....and just keep switching them back and forth.....usually about once a month.

yep, no problems doing that.....

Hi Len....I thought that sounded like a pretty steep price....so I called them myself...yep....$27,995
