Excellent video... Sound's stupid but I never realized until I saw the video that I am wasting a TON of thinner cleaning my guns. Not only spraying it out I also routinely soak many of the smaller...
Thanks everyone. I did try a "slow" thinner and even different brands of thinner. I haven't tried any retarder because frankly it is even too cold to be using slow thinner.
I am doing inside the...
I am still having problems using a HVLP gun with acrylic lacquer. It just doesn't lay down and flow out as nice as I have been able to do in the past with a conventional gun.
This weekend I ran...
yep glyptal is the correct product, engine has to be spotless for it to stick properly and last .
Unless it's a race motor that is frequently torn down .. I wouldn't do it.

My family has have had many vehicles done by Tuff-Kote over the years and the local franchise was great. They got bought out by Ziebart years ago and it is not the same.
Ziebart would not honor...
Cars parked over gravel or dirt floors always seem to fair far worse than over cement.
However a car that is stored long term over concrete should consider having a barrier put down over the...
The 2 types of screw compressors I am aware of are oil sealed and oiless.
The oil type actually submerges the screw in oil to help it seal. Oiless models are specified for areas where the risk of...
Not a pro bodyman but I have done several restorations that required the use of flatteners. Some things I have learned (the hard way)....
I always have the flattener added in at the paint store....
Thanks everyone... I am going to look into a vintage gun or perhaps try a compliant gun as Len mentioned.
I love the idea of saving paint and reduced overspray but not with the finish I am getting...
The epoxy should be fine under the hinges. Many cars had no paint under the hinges originally.
If it's a restoration I wouldnt use seam sealer around the hinges.
Thanks Lonnie - Paint is R-M Acrylic Lacquer.
I am using a 5hp 2-stage champion compressor, 80 gallon tank, 3/4 copper line, 3/8 hose and sharpe regulator.
I performed the cfm pressure drop...
I've been tearing my hair out for several months trying to get a decent finish using a "modern" gun with Acrylic Lacquer. All the other equipment is the same only the guns are different. Good...
That looks like a beautifuly done car. You and your brother must be very proud.
Kudos to the new owner for getting in touch with your brother to get the "facts" correct.... Most guys would blow it...
My dad spent alot of time in high school working in a old custom shop. Most of his cars have brass or silver solder in them skimmed over with filler and all have held up over 20 years no problem.

I see a trend ... a buddy called me last week about this very problem.. He's not real mechanical and thought they were leaking at the threads.
They were all leaking at the couplings... All came...
I have sprayed both rustoleum and latex house paint with a conventional siphon feed gun on several home projects without any trouble. You have to experiment with the reduction and pressure a bit.
...
In this case I believe he would do best and experiment with gun settings and products on his own and use what "feels" best for him.
Since they are custom guitars I would be focused on a providing...
I would remove all the old primer and examine/redo the existing bodywork. That is a long time to sit unprotected (no topcoat).
I have a 65 Satellite and to paint everything as original that was...
Yes , You can buy a tool that magnetizes and demagnitizes tools. Basically a 2 ended plastic bar with holes on each end.
You can find them at any decent hardware store...Usually advertised as a...
I have heard of people mixing a little talc into there lettering enamel but no mention of putting it into a clearcoat.
Yes, round side markers in 68 and square 69 and up.
Considering the age of the car I would remove it.
Cheap insurance and a chance to see what is going on underneath.
If it is lacquer primer it will come off easily.
Be sure the belt isn't to tight.. It can cause the bearings to heat up, windings heat up and motor to slow.
Motor could also have bad windings or bearing. Quickest way to narrow it down is to pull...
Tne speed air is a decent compressor not real quiet but will do the job.
Most compressor motors are severly overated - just because it says 5 hp , 7hp, etc. means very little in today's world. It...
All those areas look pretty rough. You are going to have to grind or re blast those spots anyway for a proper repair.
It does look like water in the lines or on the surface in some of those spots....
I always feel it's YOUR car . If your not planning on selling it soon than build it how you like.
BUT if it is a investment then I would reconsider....
FYI - Burnt orange is a pretty rare...
I also believe it is caused by the expansion and contraction of disimilar materials of different thicknesses.
Usually any filler (mar-glass, all-metal, rage) will cause this (with black cars being...
I've always had excellent luck with lacquer UNTIL I switched to a HVLP gun.(Sharpe T-1 titanium). Ended up with alot more peel, you had to spray with a fairly narrow pattern and had to move slow.

Steve is correct - make sure the sump is drained (most new compressors are empty already) and transport it lying down.
Moving one upright is very unstable and very top heavy especially if you need...
Thanks Guys I appreciate you taking the time to reply. Was suprised that it's still available.
Fortunately it's not something I need to use.
Just trying to find out what this product is used for and is it used in the base or the clear coats?.
I am working on a lacquer car and I was thinking it helps with sand scratches or maybe it...
Never tried the dry guide coat before. 3M says it can be used for wet or dry sanding??
I have a car in BC/CC yellow lacquer that has to be color sanded - rebased and then cleared and I thought the...
Thanks everybody.. I was using fresh 80 grit and changing it often but I was really getting after it.
I will hit it again with a lighter touch and try the glaze.
I have a couple of minor ripples on a hood that I missed during the first round of blocking. I skimmed them with Euro-soft, sanded, re-primed and blocked again with a guide coat and actually made the...
Product is definately epoxy primer (Southern Polyurethane). My buddies have been nagging me to get out of the stone age .
The confusing part is I was told epoxy has a mechanical bond...
I have always scrubbed the panel with soap and water , flushed with clean water then used DX579 metal cleaner followed by DX52056 Metal Conditioner to treat and remove any remaining rust and preserve...
I have a 25 x 35 pole barn with a 15 ft ceiling (all well insulated). I heat it with a Williams sealed cumbustion chamber furnace. Exhaust is thru the wall and it works very well. I also have 2...

Thanks guys . I decided to go with the full hood. Just placed my order from the store.
I am very close to purchasing a HobbyAir 2 from Len (been dragging my feet hoping for another "spring sale") :D
I am undecided between the full hood OR the 1/2 mask WITH Hood. I don't have a...
I have the TP Tools 960 cabinet and the Champion 5HP 80 gal compressor and am satisfied. They are not as well made as more commercial units like Trinco (they use thinner guage metals and sheet metal...

Thanks for the help! I found some of the "professional grade" 3M disposables today at a local supplier, so far they are working much better.
Said they filter out 95% of particulate matter and are...
As I get older I'm finding out I am more sensitive to dust while grinding and sanding. The dust from cut-off wheels is the WORST. I have tried different wheel manufacturers and a couple of different...
