Need tips with my fiberglass project

Ive bought a rollpan for splash bed (made of fiberglass) and it had an hole on it.. ( the previous owner wanted to make a neon project or something) so i want to shave the hole..

ive started and ive used fiberglass mat + fiberglass resin to cover the hole.. now there is like 1/4 of fiberglass missing to be flush with the pan.. but ive try to sand the fiberglass and it's a pain in the *** ... it's real hard to get everything smooth... a friend of mine told me that i can use body filler to do the rest.. because it is very easy to sand and smooth everything... what should i do?

I'm sticking my neck out here by offering the following information. For starters the "offical line" is that bondo/filler should never be more than 1/4" thick. Well, that would be fine in a perfect world but most of us don't live in a perfect world. Ideally you would have used a makeshift form on the front side of that pan to where the new glass patch would be close to level with the rest of the panel. BUT since its not that way then your options are limited. Rough up the fiberglass patch with 36 or 40 grit sand paper so that not shiny spots remain. Use a short strand filler like Duraglas, Marglas, Bondoglas etc to fill in the low spot then finish off with regular lightweight filler. I hope you roughed up the fiberglass pan around the repair area before you applied the glass resin and matt. The information I offered is not an ideal situation but it should work fine with no long term problems.

I agree with Phil, using a fiberglass strand reinforced filler like Everglass by Evercoat would be what I would do in this case. It WILL fill it with one application.
