Sounds like you "cut" the finish but didn't "Buff" enough. What product did you use to polish out the surface and what type of pad?

1000 to 2000 that's too much of a jump. You're likely just uncovering your 1000 grit scratch when you buff.
That said, do this. On the part that you've buffed, go back again with 2000, cutting first one direction, three passes on every square inch, then cut across those scratches with the same paper but lighter pressure. It's an X pattern. Then try buffing with the wool pad and Surefinish.
I'm pretty sure that will do it on the parts you've all ready buffed. On the rest, go over it again with 1500, then 2000 and so on. That should solve the problem.

Robert's right. 2000 won't take 1000 scratches away and compound takes a long time to get out 1000. Buffing anything under 1200 will take a long time and not worth it. I'd even say at least 1500 before buffing. Hope it works out for you.
